9'2" x 12'6" Oriental Rug | Red & Gold Antique Design All-Over Floral | Brand New Natural Wool
This is a room-filling hand-knotted Oriental rug woven in India to an antique court formula: a deep red ground covered edge to edge in flowering vinework, a small gold medallion held at the center, and a wide camel gold border that lifts the whole piece. The wool is natural, hand spun and lustrous, and the photographs show the slight shift in tone across the field that only comes from undyed and vegetable toned fibers rather than machine uniformity. At 9'2" x 12'6" it is built for a full living room or a large dining table with chairs pulled out, and the pile is thick enough to feel substantial underfoot while the drawing stays crisp. The rug is brand new and never used, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted piece.
Design and Motifs
The field is a continuous all-over design rather than a single dominant medallion layout. Curling arabesque vines run in mirrored pairs from end to end, carrying large serrated palmettes, open rosettes, split leaves and small cypress-shaped blossoms. At the center sits a compact oval medallion in gold, filled with a dark 8 petal rosette and tiny scrolling leaf tendrils, with faint pendant forms reaching out above and below it. The main border repeats a cartouche and palmette rhythm, each cartouche anchored by an orange and black floral head, linked by a thin vine that threads through smaller flowers. Two narrow guard bands in pale sage frame it on either side, and the corners are resolved cleanly, with the border drawing turned rather than cut off. This kind of balanced spacing is what separates good antique design reproductions from busy ones, and it reads well among other 9x12 Oriental rugs of the same classical school.
A Deep Red Field Against Camel Gold
Red is the main color here, and it is a true deep red with a cool wine undertone rather than a bright fire red, slightly mottled where the hand spun wool takes dye at different rates. Against it the floral work is drawn in warm camel gold, soft straw ivory, dusty sage green, coral and a muted rose pink, with fine black outlining that gives every palmette a clear edge. The wide border shifts to a lighter honey gold ground, cooling toward pale celadon in the guard stripes and warming to pumpkin orange in the corner cartouches. The central medallion repeats that gold, so the eye travels from border to center without a jump. Color balance like this makes it one of the easier red and burgundy rugs to furnish around, since it carries warm woods, brass, cream upholstery and dark navy equally well.
Made in India: Weaving and Quality
India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is produced today, and this rug is a clear example of why. It is knotted entirely by hand on a cotton foundation with a natural wool pile, and the folded back corner shows a tight, even knot count with the design reading almost as clearly from the reverse as from the face. The weave is consistent across all 12'6" of length, the selvages are hand finished in red, and the ivory cotton fringe is an extension of the warps rather than an applied trim. Workshops of this caliber draw on the same cartoon traditions that produced the classical antique carpets of the 19th century, but they weave with modern quality control and wool that has not been chemically stripped. The result is a heavy, dense piece that will take decades of family traffic and keep its shine.
