9'8" x 13'2" Persian Kashan Rug | Signed Red & Navy Floral Medallion | Excellent Condition
This is a full room-size Kashan in the format most buyers are hunting for and rarely find signed: 9'8" x 13'2", hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, with a 3/8" pile that still stands up evenly across the whole field. A woven cartouche sits in the upper border, which on a piece like this means a named workshop rather than an anonymous village loom. The wool has the soft lanolin sheen that good Persian Kashan rugs are known for, the selvedges and fringes are sound, and the condition is excellent throughout. It sits comfortably among our 10x13 Persian rugs and ships with a certificate of authenticity.
Design and Motifs
The drawing follows the classic Kashan formula and executes it with real discipline. A navy lobed medallion holds the center, stepped and hooked at its outline, with an ivory inner cartouche framing a sky blue 8 petal rosette at the core. Four large ivory and navy spandrels anchor the corners, each filled with curling vine, palmettes and small leaf sprays. Between them the field runs as a dense all-over floral lattice: thin brown vine stems carrying rosettes, buds, cypress-like leaf forms and tiny blossoms, mirrored precisely top to bottom and side to side. A pendant floral cresting rises above and below the medallion. The border system is built in 7 bands, with a wide navy main border of alternating palmettes and rosettes set between pale blue and ivory guard stripes, all drawn in curved line rather than angular village shorthand.
Color: Deep Tomato Red, Navy and Sky Blue
The field is a deep tomato red, warm rather than brown, and it holds the same tone from end to end with only the gentle shift of natural dye lots that gives handmade work its depth. Against it the navy of the medallion and main border reads almost black in low light and opens into true indigo in daylight. The real life of the rug comes from the mid-range blues: sky blue and cornflower petals scattered through the floral field, and a clear light blue in the medallion core that pulls the eye straight to the center. Ivory outlines every medallion edge and spandrel, keeping the reds and blues from running together, and small accents of soft rose, salmon, mustard gold, olive green and chestnut brown appear in individual blossoms. If you are building a room around warm tones, this sits with the rest of our red Persian rugs.
Kashan: Central Persia and the Weave
Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its looms trace back to the Safavid court workshops. The town's reputation rests on two things: soft lustrous local wool and a drawing tradition that kept the curved line alive when most village weaving went geometric. Those are exactly the traits in this piece. The back shows a tight, regular knot with no slack rows, which is what lets a weaver carry a vine through a curve without it stepping; the ruler photo shows that density clearly. Kashan is also the design most people have already seen without naming it: when you watch Shark Tank there is a Persian Kashan on the floor. At 9'8" x 13'2" this one covers a large formal room properly, with the medallion centered and the borders left clear of furniture.
