9'8" x 13'2" Persian Kashan Rug | Signed Ivory All-Over Floral | Excellent Condition

This is a signed room-size Kashan on a quiet ivory ground, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and finished with a 3/8" pile that still stands full and even edge to edge. At 9'8" x 13'2" it sits squarely in the classic 10x13 Persian rug range, long enough to run a sofa wall and still carry the front legs of the flanking chairs. What separates it from most decorative pieces of this scale is the drawing: the vine work is small, continuous and disciplined, and the weaver put his name in a cartouche at the top of the main border, which in Persian Kashan rugs is a workshop marker rather than a decoration. Design and Motifs

The field is an all-over floral composition rather than a single dominant medallion, though a small 8 petal rosette anchors the exact center and a soft lobed halo of pale blue vine work opens around it. From that point the pattern spreads in mirrored repeats of palmettes, curling serrated leaves, lotus heads and tiny budding sprays, all joined by a thin arabesque stem that never breaks. The 4 corners carry lightly drawn spandrels that echo the center without shouting, a restrained touch typical of the better Kashan cartoons. The border system runs 5 bands deep: a broad main border of alternating palmettes and rosettes on a pale ground, two narrow floral guard stripes on either side, and a fine outer meander. Image 3 shows the signature cartouche set into the main border, flanked by symmetrical vase-and-blossom figures, with a small red star above the script.

Ivory Ground with Blue, Rust and Olive Detail

The dominant reading is ivory, a warm undyed cream that shifts slightly toward oatmeal where the wool takes the light. Against it the palette is deliberately cool and muted: sky blue and pale slate carry most of the vine work, deeper navy outlines the leaves and the border meanders, and a soft gray-blue fills the outer guard stripes. Warmth comes from small, scattered accents rather than large blocks, with terracotta rust in the palmette centers, dull olive and sage in the leaf tips, mustard gold in the border blossoms and a faded rose that reads almost dusty pink in the field flowers. The absence of a strong red field, the usual Kashan signature, is what makes this piece work in rooms where a classic red rug would take over. Under lamplight the ivory warms to a soft champagne and the blues settle back, which is exactly why this coloring suits pale plaster walls, oak floors and mixed antique and contemporary furniture.

Kashan: The Town and the Weave

Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its looms trace back to the Safavid court workshops that set the standard for curvilinear floral drawing. The local wool is soft and lustrous, which is why a Kashan pile takes light the way it does here, and the town's weavers work from full cartoons rather than from memory, giving the mirrored precision you can see across this field. The reverse in image 5 shows tight, regular knot nodes with the pattern fully legible from the back, the mark of a properly beaten weave on a firm cotton foundation.
