9'9" x 12'10" Persian Kashan Rug | All-Over Floral Ivory Field | 1980's, Perfect Condition
This is a room-size Persian Kashan rug woven in the 1980's, measuring 9'9" x 12'10" with a 3/8" wool pile on a cotton foundation. The ivory ground is unusual for Kashan, which is better known for its deep red fields, and it makes this piece far easier to place in a light room. The pile is still full and even end to end, the selvedges are tight and the fringe is intact, which is why the condition reads as perfect rather than as a used floor rug. It sits comfortably in the 10x13 Persian rugs group. Every rug we ship, this one included, travels with a certificate of authenticity recording origin, materials and measurements.
Design and Motifs
The field is a continuous all-over floral lattice rather than a single dominant medallion layout, and that is the interesting part of the drawing. Thin vines run corner to corner carrying palmettes, serrated leaves and small 8 petal rosettes, each blossom outlined so it stays legible against the pale ground. At the center sits a compact lobed medallion with a stepped outline and 4 small pendants, drawn small on purpose so it reads as a focal point without breaking the repeat. Four spandrels anchor the corners of the inner field. The border system is a wide main band of meandering vine and rosettes flanked by paired narrow guard stripes, with an extra outer band of small rosettes on red, so the frame counts 5 distinct stripes before the plain ivory edge.
Color: Cream Ivory Ground with Blue and Olive Shading
The ground is a warm cream ivory, closer to unbleached wool than to white, and it carries a gentle natural abrash that you can see across the open areas in the detail photos. Against it the florals work in two registers of blue: a dark indigo navy for the larger palmettes and leaf outlines, and a lighter cornflower to sky blue for the scrolling vines and the smaller blossoms. Olive and sage green fill the leaves, while soft brown and tobacco tones carry the stems and some of the larger flower heads. The central medallion is worked in a pale blue-green with ochre outlining, which keeps it quiet. Small hits of red, rust and crimson appear in the flower centers and run through the guard stripes, giving the whole palette its lift. If a light ground is your constraint, compare it against our other ivory Persian rugs.
Kashan: The Town and the Weave
Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its weaving goes back to the Safavid court workshops. The town's reputation rests on two things: soft lustrous local wool and a disciplined curvilinear drawing style that holds a true curved line through vine and palmette. You see both here, in the clean outlining of every blossom and in the way the pile has stayed glossy after four decades. Kashan is also the most recognizable Persian city weave in American interiors: when you watch Shark Tank there is a Persian Kashan on the floor. The back shown in the final photograph gives you the knotting to look at directly, a fine even cotton warp with tight rows that explain how this much floral detail fits into a 9'9" x 12'10" field.
