Almost 20 feet of ivory ground, drawn edge to edge with one uninterrupted floral lattice and signed in the top border by the weaver who finished it. Pieces at this length belong to a small group of oversize Persian rugs that were commissioned for a specific room rather than woven on speculation, and the drawing holds its scale without a single lazy repeat. Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The field is a continuous all-over system of thin curling vines that link rosettes, split palmettes, sickle leaves and small multi-petal blossoms, mirrored along the long axis so the pattern reads the same from either end of the room. The close-up shows how disciplined the drawing is: every vine terminates in a flower rather than trailing off, and the dark outlines keep each element legible against the pale ground. A wide main border of connected palmettes and rosettes frames the field, flanked by narrow floral guard stripes on both sides, and the signature cartouche sits centered in the upper border above the border flowers.

A Closer Look at the Ivory, Blue and Green Palette

The field is a warm undyed ivory, closer to cream than white, which is what makes the blues sit so quietly on top of it. Three separate blues are at work: a deep navy that outlines the vines and holds the drawing together, a mid sky blue in the leaves and blossoms, and a clear turquoise that fills the main border and gives the rug its overall cool cast. Soft sage and olive greens appear in the leafwork, with small touches of rust, brick red and tan in the flower heads and in the border rosettes. Seen from across a large room the piece reads ivory and blue-green; up close it is far more varied than that.

Kashan: The Weaving Town and the Quality

Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its workshops descend from the Safavid court tradition that produced some of the most refined floral rugs ever woven. The local wool is soft and lustrous, which is why Kashan pile keeps a low sheen and takes indigo and madder so cleanly. Weaving something this long to a single consistent tension demands a loom and a team set up for it, and the signed cartouche tells you a named workshop stood behind the finished piece rather than an anonymous village loom.
