9'9" x 13'2" Persian Kashan Rug | Classic Red Floral Medallion | Fine Wool Pile, Excellent Condition

This is the textbook central Persian formula done properly: a deep red field packed edge to edge with flowering vinework, a navy lobed medallion with an ivory heart at the center, and a wide navy border framed by sky blue guard stripes. At 9'9" x 13'2" it is a true room-size piece, large enough to carry a formal living room or a long dining table and still show its borders. The wool is tightly beaten and the 3/8" pile has kept its luster, with no low spots, no repairs and clean original ends and sides. If you have been comparing 10x13 Persian rugs, this is the drawing and the density you are looking for in a persian kashan rug. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity identifying origin, materials and construction.

Design and Motifs

The composition builds outward from a stepped ivory cartouche at the center, which holds a small 8 petal rosette ringed in sky blue. Around it sits a navy lobed medallion filled with curling palmettes and split leaves, outlined in ivory so the shape reads cleanly against the red. The field itself is not a simple repeat: scrolling vines carry serrated leaves, carnations, rosettes and small cypress-like sprays in blue, gold, olive and ivory, each cluster drawn slightly differently, which is how you tell hand drawing from a stamped-out pattern. Four navy corner spandrels with ivory tracery close the field, and the main border runs a continuous palmette and vine meander rather than detached repeats. Two narrow sky blue guard bands carry alternating red and blue blossoms, and a fine ivory reciprocating stripe separates each level so the eye steps in rather than jumps.

A Closer Look at the Color

The field is a warm true red, closer to a ripe cherry than to orange, and it shifts a half tone lighter or deeper depending on which way you walk around the rug, the natural abrash and pile direction of good hand-spun wool. Against it the border is a very dark ink blue that photographs almost black in low light and resolves to navy in daylight. The sky blue guard stripes are the signature note here, a soft powder blue that lifts the whole palette and keeps the red from feeling heavy, and the same blue reappears throughout the field in small blossoms and leaf tips. Ivory does the structural work: it outlines the medallion, fills the central cartouche, traces the spandrels and runs as hairline reciprocal stripes between borders. Accents of mustard gold, olive green, soft rose, brick and brown fill out the flower heads, so the rug holds plenty of color while reading as a classic red and blue room anchor. Kashan: The Town and the Weave

Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its workshops trace their drawing straight back to the Safavid court tradition. The local wool is soft and lustrous, which is why a Kashan pile takes light the way this one does, and the weaving convention is a tight, even knot on a cotton foundation beaten down hard, which is what lets the weaver draw a curved vine without it breaking into steps. Look at the border detail and you can see that discipline: the ivory outlines stay one knot wide over several feet of meander. Kashan is also the most recognized Persian city design in America, the one most people have seen without knowing its name. When you watch Shark Tank there is a Persian Kashan on the floor. This example is a workshop-grade piece in excellent condition, woven to be used, and at 9'9" x 13'2" it will sit flat and square in a room that size.
