This is the classic room size, the drawing every buyer pictures when they say they want a Persian Kashan rug, and at 8'2" x 11'10" it sits under a sofa group or a 8 seat table without crowding the walls. The pile is a full 3/8" of dense wool on a cotton foundation, and the handle is heavy and firm rather than floppy, which is exactly what you want from a city weave meant to stay flat for decades. Condition is excellent with no wear, no repair and no thinning anywhere across the field; the ends and both selvages are intact and the fringes are clean and even. Design and Motifs

The layout is the textbook Kashan formula executed with real care. A lobed, cusped medallion anchors the center, built in tiers: an ivory core holding a light blue rosette, a dark surround packed with curling split leaves, and a scalloped outline finished with fine pendants at top and bottom. Four matching spandrels repeat that language at the corners, each filled with ivory palmettes and arabesque scrollwork so the corners read as part of the same drawing rather than an afterthought. The open red ground between them is not empty; it carries a continuous all over field of vines, 8 petal rosettes, carnations, small palmettes and paired leaf forms, each blossom outlined so the curve stays crisp. The border system runs 5 bands deep, a wide dark main border of alternating palmettes and rosettes joined by a running vine, framed by light blue and ivory guard stripes and an outer red band. Look at the close-up of the medallion and you can see the outlines are drawn in single knot lines, which is only possible on a tight weave.

A Deep Red Field with Ivory and Graphite Black

The field is a true tomato red, warm and saturated rather than pink or brick, and the wool carries enough luster that the tone shifts a shade lighter or deeper as you walk around it. Against that ground the medallion, spandrels and main border are worked in graphite black with a deep navy cast, a color dark enough to frame the red hard but not so flat that it kills the detail. Ivory does the drawing work: outlines, the medallion core, the corner palmettes and the narrow guard stripes that separate every band. Inside those main tones the palette opens up considerably, with sky and cornflower blue rosettes, olive and moss green leaves, soft gold, rose pink, terracotta and a little cream in the smaller blossoms. Kashan Origin and Weaving Quality
