9'9" x 13'4" Persian Kashan Rug | Red Floral Field with Navy Lobed Medallion | Semi-Antique
This is the Kashan formula done properly: a red field packed edge to edge with flowering vine, a midnight navy lobed medallion set dead center, and ivory corner spandrels that lift the whole drawing. At 9'9" x 13'4" it is a true room-size piece that lands squarely in the 10x13 Persian rugs bracket, so it will cover the seating area of a large living room or carry a long dining table without crowding the walls. Hand-knotted in central Persia on a cotton foundation with a fine wool pile, it is semi-antique rather than new, and the pile has mellowed in the way only decades of real wool will: still full and even across the field, with a quiet sheen under light. The reverse, shown with a ruler in the last photo, reads clean and tight, the knot nodes crisp and the outlines holding their shape. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The straight-on studio shot and the medallion close-up were taken under strong light and push the field toward a bright raspberry pink. The floor photographs are the truer reading: a deep cherry red with rose lights in it. Nothing about the dye has faded or run, it is purely how the camera handled the red.
Design and Motifs
The center medallion is a stepped, lobed diamond in navy, outlined twice in rose and ivory, with pointed pendant finials reaching up and down the length of the rug. Inside it sits an ivory cartouche holding a small teal 8 petal rosette, ringed by gold palmettes and curling serrated leaves, which gives the eye a bright point of focus in an otherwise dense composition. The field around it is not left open: it is covered in a continuous all over floral of rosettes, bud sprays, tiny palmettes and thin green vine scroll, drawn small and repeated with real discipline so the pattern reads as texture from standing height. The 4 corner spandrels are ivory, each filled with a different arrangement of blossoms and arabesque, and they break the red convincingly at the ends. Framing everything is a wide navy main border of linked palmettes and scrolling vine, flanked by narrow teal and ivory guard stripes and finished with a meander of small flower heads on the outermost band.
A Closer Look at the Colors
The ground is a saturated cherry red with a cool rose cast rather than a brick or tomato tone, and because the wool takes dye unevenly at the fiber level the field has gentle movement across it instead of flat coverage. Against that, the medallion and the main border read as a true midnight navy, nearly black where the pile falls away from the light and clearly blue where it catches it. The relief colors are what make this one sing: ivory and soft cream in the spandrels and guard stripes, a distinct peacock teal in the rosette centers and the inner guard band, warm gold and camel on the larger palmettes, a muted sage green on the vine work, and small touches of rose and pale pink used for outlining. There is almost no harsh contrast anywhere, every color is softened by the age of the piece, and the overall impression at a distance is deep red and dark blue with embroidered flecks of ivory and gold.
Kashan: Court Weaving in Central Persia
Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its looms trace back to the Safavid court workshops that supplied the palaces with silk and fine wool weavings. The town's modern reputation rests on three things: soft lustrous local wool, a tight even weave on a cotton foundation, and the classic drawing formula of red field, navy lobed medallion and ivory spandrels, which is exactly what this rug delivers. Kashan is also the Persian rug most Americans have already seen without knowing its name, because when you watch Shark Tank there is a Persian Kashan on the floor. The weave here is dense enough to hold the fine floral detail you see in the close-up without the outlines blurring, and the pile is clipped low and level in the Kashan manner so the pattern stays legible. If you want the background on how these are made and graded, read our Persian Kashan rugs guide.
