9' x 11'9" Ziglar Oriental Rug | Olive Green Vegetable Dyed Wool | Made in India, New

This 9' x 11'9" Ziglar is a brand new, never used hand-knotted rug woven in India from hand-spun, vegetable dyed wool on a cotton foundation. The pile is a comfortable 3/8", dense enough to hold the drawing crisply and short enough that furniture sits flat on it. What sells this piece in person is the field color: a soft olive green that behaves like a neutral in daylight and warms toward gold under lamps, framed by a generous ivory border. It is a classic room-size Oriental rug in the most useful proportion there is, and one of the easier 9x12 Oriental rugs to place because nothing in the palette fights an existing room. Every rug ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is hand-knotted, with its size, materials and origin recorded.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The first studio photograph reads warmer and more golden than the rug actually is, while the showroom floor shots taken under overhead light read cooler and greyer. The true field color sits between the two: a soft, slightly muted olive green with camel gold undertones. Ask us for a daylight photo or a video if you want to see it against your own samples before ordering.

Design and Motifs

The Ziglar layout is an all over floral design with no central medallion, so the eye travels the whole field rather than locking onto one point. Rows of shield-shaped palmettes and 8 petal rosettes are set on a loosely drawn vine, each one outlined in ivory so the motif lifts off the olive ground. Between them sit small serrated leaves, split arabesques and slender curled sprays in rust and camel that read almost as calligraphy at floor distance. The ivory main border carries large cusped palmettes alternating with turned leaf clusters, and it is bracketed by narrow camel guard stripes with a fine zigzag vine. The drawing is deliberately relaxed rather than mechanical, with motifs varying slightly from repeat to repeat, which is the mark of a weaver following a cartoon by hand instead of a printed grid. Because the pattern repeats evenly across the whole 9' x 11'9" surface, the rug still looks correct with a sofa or dining table covering part of it.

The Olive Green and Ivory Color Story

The field is a soft olive green with a sage cast, deepened here and there by the natural abrash of hand-spun, vegetable dyed wool, so the ground moves gently in bands rather than sitting as one flat block of color. Against it, the motifs are worked in ivory, warm camel gold, dusty rose, terracotta rust, soft grey-blue and a cocoa brown that supplies the outlining. The border switches the relationship: an ivory ground with olive, gold and rust palmettes, which gives the rug a bright frame and makes a room feel larger at the edges. There is no harsh black and no saturated crimson anywhere, and that restraint is why this palette sits comfortably with oak, walnut, linen, cream plaster and greys. Under daylight the green dominates; under warm lamps the gold in the wool comes forward and the whole rug reads honey-olive. Natural dyes mellow rather than fade, so the color will only soften with time.

Woven in India: Origin and Weaving Quality

India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this rug shows why. The weaving centers of northern India have spent the last several decades reviving hand-spinning, natural dye vats and the old Ziegler and Sultanabad style cartoons, and their output today is held to a standard that few other producing regions match at this price. The back photograph tells the story: even, tightly packed rows of knots on a cotton warp and weft, straight selvages, clean side finishing and hand-knotted fringe that is an extension of the foundation rather than something sewn on. The wool is hand-spun, which means the yarn takes dye unevenly by design and gives the pile its subtle depth and its slight sheen when brushed. At 3/8" the pile is durable enough for a busy floor, and the weight and squared corners of this 9' x 11'9" panel mean it will lie flat without buckling from day one.
