9' x 12'5" Persian Tabriz Rug | Kheshti Panel Garden Design | Ivory Field with Navy and Coral
This 9' x 12'5" Persian Tabriz is a kheshti, or panel, composition: the entire field is drawn as a diagonal grid of small diamond compartments, each one filled with its own miniature garden. Hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, it reads as a single ivory-toned surface from across the room and then breaks apart into dozens of separate paintings when you stand over it. The pile is even and full, the ends and sides are sound, and the condition is excellent. Because the plan is all-over rather than medallion based, furniture can sit anywhere on it without cutting off a centerpiece, which is one reason this layout is so popular in true room-size pieces. It is a natural fit for buyers shopping 9x12 Persian rugs for a living or dining room. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is a genuine hand-knotted Persian piece.
Design and Motifs
The field is set on a 45 degree lattice, with each diamond outlined by a fine navy vine and filled in a different ground color. No two neighbors repeat. Some compartments hold a symmetrical spray of carnations and palmettes around a central rosette; others carry a flowering vase, a pair of weeping willows, slim cypress trees over an olive green mound, or a single 8 petal star flower. The willow and cypress panels are the giveaway of a Tabriz garden drawing, and they are worked with real patience in the close-up photographs. Small blossoms fill the ivory interstices between panels so that no ground is left empty. The main border runs an ivory scrolling vine of large serrated palmettes and rosettes, framed on both sides by narrow coral and cartouche guard stripes, and the corners are resolved cleanly on all 4 sides. Buyers who prefer this kind of repeating layout over a single centerpiece should also look at our all-over pattern Persian rugs.
A Navy Framework Over Ivory, Coral and Teal
Navy blue is the structural color here. It draws every lattice line, outlines every leaf, and fills a scattering of the deepest panels, which is what gives the rug its weight and keeps a busy design legible. Against it, the panel grounds shift constantly: warm ivory and cream, a soft coral that leans to salmon in the light, brick and terracotta reds, a clear sea teal, dusty rose, and pockets of olive and moss green in the garden compartments. The outer selvage and the narrow outer stripe are a warmer brick coral, which frames the pale border and stops the ivory from looking washed out. Highlights of pale sky blue and white appear in the smaller blossoms and give the surface real depth, and the tonal variation across the wool reads as hand-dyed rather than flat. In a room this palette sits comfortably with cream walls, natural oak or walnut floors, and both warm and cool upholstery.
Tabriz: The Weaving Town and the Quality
Tabriz sits in northwest Persia and is the country's most organized weaving city, a place with a continuous workshop tradition going back to the Safavid era and a reputation built on disciplined drawing. Fineness there is measured in Raj, the number of knots across a gereh of roughly 2.75 inches, with 40 Raj considered commercial work, 50 Raj fine and 60 Raj collector grade. The back photograph shows a tight, regular knot line on a cotton warp and weft, with the kheshti lattice reading as crisply from the reverse as it does from the pile side, which is the honest test of a well-drawn panel rug. The wool is firm and has taken the dyes cleanly. Handled this way, a Tabriz of this size is built to be walked on for generations rather than protected, and pieces like this are exactly what people picture when they shop Persian Tabriz rugs.
