8'4" x 12'1" Persian Tabriz Rug | Ivory Field Coral Medallion | 1980s Wool

A classic 1980s workshop piece from northwest Persia, this 8'4" x 12'1" Tabriz pairs an ivory ground with a coral and navy medallion and a deep brick red border. The wool pile sits low and even, the drawing stays crisp corner to corner, and the condition is excellent with full pile and straight, original sides and ends. At 100" by 145" it covers a standard seating group or a table with chairs pulled out, which puts it squarely among the large Persian rugs most buyers are hunting for. A certificate of authenticity ships with the rug.

Design and Motifs

The field is drawn as a large stepped octagon on ivory, outlined in a fine dark line so the shape reads instantly from across a room. At its center sits a coral medallion with an inset navy core, flanked by 4 turquoise rosettes and finished top and bottom with serrated pendants. The open ivory ground around it carries an all-over scatter of vines, palmettes, carnations, small flowering vases and comb-shaped fillers, each repeated in mirror image across the long axis. Teal spandrels close the 4 corners of the octagon, and the main red border runs a steady rhythm of palmettes and rosettes between narrow guard stripes.

A Palette Built on Ivory, Coral and Brick Red

The ivory ground is warm rather than stark, closer to unbleached wool than white, which is why ivory Persian rugs like this one sit easily over oak and walnut floors. Against it the medallion reads orange red, a soft coral that lifts a shade lighter under direct light, with a dark navy heart at the center. The border is a deeper brick red, cooled by seafoam and pine green guard stripes that also turn up in the spandrels and in the leaf work. Small touches of sky blue, rose, gold and aubergine appear in the flower heads, so the rug shows many colors without ever looking busy.

Tabriz Weaving and the Quality of This Piece

Tabriz sits in the far northwest of Persia and has been the country's most organized weaving city for centuries, working to the Raj system and using the hook rather than the fingers to pull each knot. That method shows here in the tight, regular rows, the straight selvedges and the way the curved vines hold their line without wobbling. The pile is dense local wool on a cotton foundation, cropped low so the drawing stays legible, and the handle is firm without being stiff. Structure, palette and wear all read consistently for a piece of the 1980s; our guide on how to date an Oriental rug explains what to look at.
