9'8" x 14' Persian Tabriz Rug | Ivory Field Coral Medallion | 400 KPSI Wool & Silk
This is a workshop-grade Tabriz woven at roughly 400 knots per square inch, which is 60 Raj on the loom, and it shows in every inch of the drawing. The pile is wool with silk worked into the highlights, cut short at about 1/4", so the pattern reads with the sharpness of a manuscript page rather than the softness of a village rug. At 9'8" x 14' it is a true room-size piece for a formal living room or a long dining table, and it sits comfortably in the family of 10 x 14 Persian rugs when you are measuring for a space. The rug has never been used and remains in excellent condition, with full pile, straight sides and clean original fringe. It ships with a certificate of authenticity documenting origin, materials and hand-knotted construction.
Design and Motifs
A lobed central medallion anchors the field, built in concentric rings around a small rosette and finished with a pair of tall pendants top and bottom. Around it the ivory ground is covered edge to edge with a curvilinear vine system: palmettes, serrated leaves, split arabesques, cypress forms and small flowering sprays, with birds and slender four-legged animals tucked into the scroll work where the drawing opens up. The 4 corner spandrels repeat the medallion vocabulary in a denser, darker key and step cleanly into the inner guard stripe. The main border runs a chain of shield-shaped cartouches alternating with star-form rosettes, framed by narrow floral guard bands on both sides. What separates this from a commercial Tabriz is the resolution: at 400 knots per square inch the weaver can hold a curved stem through a full turn without it going angular, and the tiny animal and bird figures stay legible instead of collapsing into blocks.
A Palette of Ivory, Coral, Green and Blue
The field is a warm ivory, closer to cream and candlelight than to stark white, and the silk highlights catch light across it so the tone shifts as you walk the room. Against that ground the medallion is drawn in a soft coral that leans terracotta at the outer lobes and warms toward a rose pink at the center rings. The spandrels and the field of several border compartments carry a muted sage to olive green, a color Tabriz workshops handle better than almost anyone, and it cools the coral without fighting it. The main border is a deeper rust coral filled with pale celadon and ivory devices, so the frame reads warm from a distance and detailed up close. Blue does the quiet work: teal and deep navy appear in the medallion cups, in leaf outlines and in the innermost guard stripe, giving the pattern its definition. Small accents of gold, ochre, brick and cream complete the range and keep the whole rug reading as a soft, layered, multi-toned surface rather than a high-contrast one.
Tabriz Weaving and the Raj System
Tabriz sits in northwest Persia and has been a commercial and court weaving center for centuries, with a workshop culture that grades its own output openly. Fineness is measured in Raj, the number of knots counted across a gereh of about 2.75 inches of width: 40 Raj is everyday commercial work, 50 Raj is fine, and 60 Raj, the grade of this rug, translates to roughly 400 knots per square inch and is where collector-level Tabriz weaving begins. Only the better ateliers commit to a 9'8" x 14' carpet at that density, because the loom time runs into years rather than months. The construction follows the classic city recipe: a cotton foundation for a flat, dimensionally stable rug that lies true on the floor, a wool pile chosen for luster, silk reserved for the highlights, and a short even clip that exposes the full drawing. The back photograph shows the knot nodes in tidy rows with no distortion, which is the honest evidence of a well-tensioned loom and a disciplined weaver.
