9' x 12' Oriental Rug | Tehran Floral Medallion Design | Navy Blue & Ivory | New, Hand-Knotted in Pakistan

A new piece that has never been on a floor, this 9' x 12' rug is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and drawn in the classical Tehran design: one scalloped ivory medallion suspended in the middle of a near-black navy field that is packed, corner to corner, with flowering vines. The wool is clipped at a medium height so the drawing stays crisp, and the pile has the slight sheen you can see in the close-up photographs. It arrives with a certificate of authenticity, and at 9 by 12 it is the standard room size for a seating group, so it sits comfortably alongside our other 9x12 Oriental rugs while costing a fraction of a comparable workshop piece.

Design and Motifs

The medallion is a lobed diamond with a saw-tooth pink outline, filled with pastel palmettes, tulips, small rosettes and serrated leaves arranged in perfect mirror symmetry around a central cluster. A small shield-shaped pendant answers it above and below on the long axis. The field itself is not a repeating lattice but a garden of separate bouquets and single flowering stems: multi-petal rosettes, daisies, bell flowers and large serrated maple-style leaves, all linked by fine curling tendrils that read almost like pen work against the dark ground. The ivory main border runs alternating motifs, a big serrated orange palmette and then a rosette cradled by two dark blue arabesque leaves, between four narrow guard stripes: an olive zigzag vine with pink rosettes, a mauve ground band of small cross flowers, and a pale ribbon of blue and pink blossoms. The corners of the border resolve cleanly, a detail you can check in the corner and folded-edge photographs.

Navy Blue, Ivory and a Full Pastel Range

The field is a deep navy blue that goes almost ink black in low light, which is exactly what makes the rest of the palette work. Against it sit ivory and cream, apricot and bright orange, olive and sage green, soft sky blue, pale rose through hot magenta, lilac and small touches of deep burgundy. Individual leaves are shaded across two or three tones, so the whites are never flat; they move from chalk ivory to butter yellow to peach within a single leaf. The main border reads as ivory with a warm blush cast, a few shades softer than the cream of the plain outer band and the cotton fringe. Buyers shopping navy blue area rugs usually want a dark anchor for a light room, and this one gives that while still carrying enough pink, orange and green to tie into upholstery and art.

Made in Pakistan: Weaving Town and Quality

Pakistan's weaving centers have spent decades reproducing classical city patterns on upright looms, and the best of that work, like this piece, is genuine hand-knotted weaving with a wool pile tied knot by knot onto a cotton warp and weft. That is what separates a real Oriental rug from a tufted or machine-made copy. The knot count here is high enough to carry the curved line of the Tehran drawing, which is the real test of a floral medallion design: the vines bend smoothly instead of stepping, and the tiny bud and tendril motifs stay legible. The back shown in the last photograph is tight and even, the selvages are overcast by hand, and the warp ends are finished as a plain woven band before the fringe. Expect a flat, stable lie and a pile dense enough to take traffic for generations.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
