10'1" x 14'1" Oushak Mamluk Rug | Turquoise, Gold & Green Wool | Hand-Knotted in India, New
This is a brand new, never used room-size piece measuring 10'1" x 14'1", hand-knotted in India with a 100% wool pile on a cotton foundation. The drawing follows the Oushak tradition but takes the stricter Mamluk route: a single green and ivory octagon at dead center, star panels set around it, and two banded end panels filled with small flowering trees. The wool has the slightly glossy, handspun look you can see in the close-ups, and the colors sit in a soft turquoise and gold range rather than the heavy reds most large rugs default to. Every rug we ship leaves with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is hand-knotted and describing the size, materials and origin exactly as listed above.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The overhead photograph was taken under flat studio light, so the field reads as a cool pale grey-blue. The angled view and the pile close-ups are closer to the rug in daylight, where the turquoise, saffron gold and rose tones come forward. Judge the color from the detail shots, and remember that light in your own room will shift it again.
Design and Motifs
The field is organized the way the old Mamluk weavings were: a central octagon ringed by stepped green and ivory outlines, holding an 8 petal rosette in rose, turquoise and gold at its core. Four lobed cartouches and four shield shaped panels radiate out from it, each one filled with a small floral spray, while 4 corners of the center panel carry 8 pointed stars in magenta, gold and apple green. The background between these shapes is not left empty; it is covered with a dense lattice of tiny teal blossoms and diamonds, visible clearly in the corner close-up. Above and below the center panel run two horizontal end panels of upright flowering trees and cypress forms, alternating teal, lime and rose, a motif that gives the rug a clear top and bottom. The border system is layered: a narrow ivory band of scrolling hooks, then a wide outer band alternating ivory octagon rosettes with teal palmette cartouches and gold ringed roundels, each one drawn slightly differently by hand.
A Turquoise, Gold and Green Palette
The ground is a pale, slightly dove grey blue, and almost all of the pattern work on it is laid in turquoise and deeper teal, which is what makes this read at a distance as one of the brighter turquoise and blue rugs rather than a muted neutral. Against that cool base the weaver put warm accents in short bursts: saffron and marigold gold on the border roundels and the outlines of the center cartouches, rust orange on the small finials, and clear magenta rose on the star points and tree stems. The central octagon brings in a true apple green and a soft ivory, and that green reappears as leaf tips in the end panels, which ties the two halves of the design together. Ivory and cream carry the borders and keep the blues from closing in. The close-up of the folded pile shows how these colors are actually built: fine abrash variation within each turquoise area, so the field breathes instead of sitting flat, which is the mark of handspun, small batch dyed wool.
Origin, Weaving and Quality
The back label confirms it plainly: hand knotted in India, design 1154, size 10'1 x 14'1. India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, and this rug is a good example of why. The knotting is even across a very wide 121 inch loom width, the sides are tightly overcast, the ends are finished in plain cotton fringe, and the back shows clean, regular knot rows with no slack or puckering, which is what keeps a rug of this size lying flat. As an Oriental rug woven to a historical Anatolian pattern in a modern workshop, it sits comfortably with both antique furnishings and modern and contemporary interiors. The pile is left at a medium height, dense enough to take daily traffic under a dining table or across an open living area, and because it has never been used there is no wear anywhere in the field or borders.
