7'7" x 10'1" Oushak Rug | Light Gray & Blue with Ivory Borders | Brand New Hand-Knotted Wool
This 7'7" x 10'1" rug is a brand new, hand-knotted piece woven in the Oushak manner: a wide, open field, drawing that stays deliberately loose and angular, and a palette kept quiet on purpose. The field reads as a soft slate gray with a blue cast, and the double ivory borders lift it without introducing a single loud color. It is a true handmade Oriental rug, knot by knot on a cotton foundation with a 100% wool pile, not a machine-made imitation, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity. At this size it covers a standard seating group or a six-chair table, which puts it squarely in the most requested bracket of 8x10 hand-knotted rugs. Condition is perfect, with full pile, straight sides and clean ivory fringe at both ends.
Design and Motifs
The field carries a classic all-over design built on 4 large stepped ivory medallions set on a long central axis, with a small ivory lozenge at the exact center and 2 more lozenges anchoring each end. Around them the weaver scattered serrated leaves, 8 point star rosettes, little hooked flower heads and thin curving vine stems that connect the elements without ever tightening into a formal lattice. The corners are filled with big crenellated palmette forms that step inward from the border, the kind of angular drawing you only get on a village loom working from memory rather than a tight cartoon. The main border is an ivory ground carrying a repeating chain of tulip and arrow-shaped buds hung from a continuous vine, with small rosette diamonds spaced at intervals, and it is framed inside and out by a narrow guard stripe of comma and paisley forms. The result is detailed up close but calm from across the room, which is exactly what this design is prized for.
A Study in Light Gray, Blue and Ivory
The field is a light gray that leans cool and dusty blue, shifting a shade lighter and a shade deeper in broad horizontal bands as the wool takes the dye, which is the natural abrash you want in a hand-knotted piece and not a flaw. Against it the motifs are worked in ivory, chalk cream and a warm sandy beige, with a few outlines carried in a deeper slate blue that gives the medallions their edge. The borders invert the scheme: a cream to ivory ground with the tulip buds picked out in medium and dark slate blue, soft gray and the same oatmeal beige, so the frame feels brighter than the field without any hard contrast. There is no red, no black and no strong gold anywhere in the rug. For a room working in cool neutrals, pale blues, white trim, linen and oak, this sits in the same family as the best gray and charcoal rugs, but with more life in it because every tone is hand-dyed wool rather than a flat print.
Oushak Weaving, Made in India
The Oushak design comes out of western Anatolia, where weavers built their reputation on large-scale drawing, generous spacing and soft faded palettes. This piece is honestly made in India, which is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted weaving now happens. The workshops there run skilled looms, hand-spin and hand-dye their own wool, and finish rugs at a standard that was hard to find anywhere 30 years ago. You can see it in the details: a firm even weave with no buckling, borders that hold their line the full 10'1" length, selvages wrapped tight and a pile clipped a touch longer than a city rug so the wool catches light and feels substantial underfoot. The wool is good quality and resilient, the sort of pile that opens back up after furniture is moved. Being brand new, the rug has no restoration, no reweaving and no thin spots, and it arrives ready for decades of daily use.
