A brand new, never used room-size piece woven entirely by hand in wool on a cotton foundation, this rug pairs a smoky charcoal field with a wide sky blue border, which is an unusual and very current reading of the Oushak formula. At 10'2" x 14' it covers a full seating group or a 10 seat table without crowding, and it sits squarely in the most requested bracket of our 10x14 area rugs. The pile is a comfortable medium height with a dry, lustrous handle, the selvedges are firm, and the fringe is clean and untrimmed. Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The field carries an open, loosely drawn all-over lattice of thin ivory vines that link large serrated palmettes, hooked leaf forms and 8 petal rosettes, with small crosses and flowering sprigs filling the ground between them. The drawing is deliberately angular and a little naive, which is what separates the Oushak idiom from the tight curvilinear city styles, and the scale of the motifs is large enough to read clearly from across a room. Stepped corner brackets in blue and sage anchor the 4 corners of the field, and the wide main border alternates big frontal blossoms with leafy palmettes, framed top and bottom by narrow ivory guard bands running a small rosette and leaf meander. The Charcoal and Soft Blue Palette

The ground is a deep charcoal gray with a warm brown undertone, and because the wool is hand spun it shifts gently in tone across the width, giving the field a soft heathered movement rather than a flat printed gray. Against that dark ground the motifs are drawn in pale powder blue, bright turquoise, blush peach, sage and grass green, soft buttery gold and clean ivory, so the pattern glows rather than shouts. The main border reverses the scheme completely: a calm mid blue, closer to faded denim, carrying the same peach, green and turquoise blossoms, edged by pale ivory and sand guard stripes. Brown and olive appear in small quantities inside the border flowerheads and give the palette weight. The weaver's own tag records the colorway simply as "Charcoal Multi", which is a fair summary of a rug that works equally well over pale oak, dark walnut or a cool stone floor.
