8'2" x 10'2" Oushak Design Oriental Rug | Gold Field with Rust and Brown | Hand-Knotted Wool, Brand New
This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted rug in the Oushak idiom, woven in India entirely of wool pile on a cotton foundation and measuring 8'2" x 10'2". The weave is firm and even, the pile is cut at a medium height that still feels full underfoot, and the ivory fringe is hand-tied and untouched. What sells this piece in person is the field color: a deep honey gold that carries the whole design without a single hard contrast anywhere on the surface. It sits squarely in the most usable category of all, the 8x10 Oriental rugs that anchor a seating group or a full dining set, and if you are weighing the difference between a Persian piece and a contemporary Oriental rug, this is a good example of how strong the modern work has become. Every rug we ship leaves with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted.
Design and Motifs
The field is a classic Oushak all-over design, with no central medallion. Instead, large serrated rosettes sit in staggered rows across the gold ground, each one roughly 10 inches across, built from feathered outer petals around a small stepped star center. Between them a thin vine meanders in brown and rust, throwing off curled lanceolate leaves, small 5 petal blossoms and tiny tulip buds, so the eye never lands on a repeat too quickly even though the drawing is strictly ordered. The border system runs 5 bands deep. The wide main border is drawn on the same gold ground and carries alternating rosettes and candelabra-like vine clusters with little paired dots, the kind of loose village drawing that keeps an Oushak from looking machine made. Inside and outside it, narrow rust bands hold small 4 point stars, and reciprocal ivory zigzag stripes separate each layer, visible in the close border photograph. The corners resolve cleanly, with the main border motif turning the angle instead of being cut off.
Color: Honey Gold, Rust, Green and Brown
The ground is a warm honey gold that moves between pale camel and a deeper amber depending on which way the pile lies, the natural abrash of hand-spun wool rather than any flaw. Against it, the big rosettes alternate between chocolate brown, terracotta rust and a soft blue-green that reads almost slate in low light, each one highlighted with pistachio and olive green in the petals and a cream or ivory star at the very center. The vine work is drawn in a dusty brown with rust and faded salmon touches, and the leaves pick up the same muted sage. The main border is rust-brown over gold, with ivory and pale green guard stripes keeping the bands legible. Nothing here is loud: the entire palette is tonal, which is exactly why these gold and yellow rugs work so well with walnut and oak furniture, cream upholstery, and both warm white and greige walls.
Origin and Weaving Quality
The Oushak design comes out of western Anatolia, where weavers built large-scale floral fields in soft golds and corals for the European trade. This rug was made in India, which is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, and we say that with confidence: the Indian workshops have the wool, the dye houses and the trained weavers to execute a border system 5 bands deep without wobble. Look at the reverse in the photographs and you see a tight, regular knot grid with no gaps and a clean selvage, the mark of a workshop piece rather than a loose commercial weave. The wool is dense and takes light well, and because it was spun and dyed in small lots the color has depth rather than flatness. Pile height, knot density and the firm cotton foundation together mean a rug that will hold its shape under furniture and take decades of real traffic.
