8'2" x 9'9" Chotan Oriental Rug | Brown Field with Gold Palmette Lattice | Brand New Hand-Knotted Wool
This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted Oriental rug in the Chotan design, woven entirely by hand in natural wool on a cotton foundation and measuring 8'2" x 9'9". The weavers have kept the pile low and even, which lets the drawing stay crisp across a field this wide and gives the surface a quiet, almost matte luster you can see where the light crosses it. Nothing here shouts: the palette is brown, gold and a soft sage, and the handful of small red rosettes are the only sharp notes in the whole piece. At just under 8 by 10 feet it is one of the most practical sizes we sell, and it sits comfortably in the company of other 8x10 Oriental rugs without looking like a reproduction of anything. Every rug we ship leaves with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is hand-knotted, its origin, materials and measurements.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The flat overhead photograph reads cooler and greyer than the rug actually is. The close-up and angled images are the truer record: in person the field is a warm, slightly golden brown and the border is a deeper honey gold. This is a studio lighting effect, not fade, not wear and not a defect in the weave.
Design and Motifs
The field is a true all-over design with no central medallion. Large lobed rosette discs sit on a repeating lattice, each one built from an 8 petal rosette center ringed by curling leaves, with a single small red flower dropped into the middle as a focal point. Between the discs run heavy paired scrolls, almost cloudband in feeling, linked by small stepped diamonds and four pointed star fillers, so the eye travels diagonally rather than stopping in one place. The main border is wide and compartmented: alternating panels hold a rosette with facing split leaves and a running vine with tulip-like buds, framed by narrow guard stripes of connected blossoms. Corners are resolved cleanly, with the border pattern turning rather than being cut off, which is the sign of a weaver working from a well drawn plan. The outer edge is finished in a plain brown selvage with short ivory fringe at both ends.
A Warm Brown, Gold and Sage Green Palette
The ground is a warm neutral brown that shifts between taupe and a soft walnut as the pile direction changes, with faint horizontal abrash giving the field depth instead of flatness. Over that brown the drawing is worked in pale gold and wheat, rising to a stronger honey gold in the wide border, so the border frames the field by tone rather than by a hard color break. Sage green does the quiet work: it outlines the rosette petals, fills the leaf tips and runs through the border vines, cooling the gold just enough to keep the whole rug from reading orange. Tiny red rosettes, perhaps 20 or 30 of them across the entire piece, punctuate the border panels and the medallion centers. For buyers building a room around earth tones, this belongs with the warmer brown Oriental rugs rather than the grey or charcoal side of the spectrum.
Woven in Afghanistan: The Chotan Tradition and Weave Quality
Chotan is the name Afghan workshops give to this family of patterns, drawn from the old oasis weaving of Central Asia and reworked at a scale that suits modern rooms. Afghanistan has become one of the strongest sources of serious hand-knotted work made today, and this piece shows why: hand spun wool with a long staple, so the pile takes a soft sheen rather than a synthetic shine, a tight and regular knot across the back, and dye lots mellowed to the tone of an older rug without any of the thinning that real age brings. The back photograph shows an even, close weave with no slubs or loose rows, and the rug lies flat and square with straight sides. It is new, unused and in perfect condition, with wool heavy enough for a family room or under a dining table and drawing fine enough to reward a close look.
