10'4" x 13'11" Persian Mahal Rug | Sarouk All-Over Floral Design | Ivory Border, Excellent Condition

This 10'4" x 13'11" Persian Mahal is a true room-size piece, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and drawn in the dense floral manner associated with Persian Sarouk rugs. The field is covered edge to edge with curling vines, palmettes and blossoms, with only a small ivory and navy medallion at the center to anchor the composition, which is exactly why a rug like this works so well under furniture: there is no large open ground to be hidden. At 124" x 167" it is one of the more usable formats in 10x14 Persian rugs, and the 3/8" wool pile still stands up full and even across the whole surface. Every rug we ship travels with a certificate of authenticity listing origin, materials and measurements.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is a classic all-over floral in the Sarouk vocabulary: long curved vine stems that double back on themselves, large curled serrated leaves, split palmettes and clusters of small round blossoms, all repeated in mirrored pairs up and down the field. The central medallion is unusually modest for a rug of this scale, a pointed ivory cartouche no more than 2 feet long with a navy core, a bracketed outline and pink and blue flowerheads worked inside it. Dark navy quarter-spandrels mark the 4 corners of the field rather than large plain ones, so the pattern keeps running right up to the inner guard stripe. The main border is a wide ivory band of alternating fan palmettes and standing floral sprays, framed by narrow rose and navy guard stripes and a small repeating bud stripe, a border treatment collectors look for in Persian Sarough rugs.

Color: Deep Red Field, Ivory Border, Sky Blue Accents

The field is a deep clear red that reads brighter and warmer in the close-up photographs and settles into a richer tone across the full overhead view, which is normal behavior for wool pile catching light from different directions. Against it the ivory border is soft and slightly creamy rather than stark white, which keeps the contrast handsome instead of harsh. The pattern itself is carried in sky blue and mid blue flowerheads, deep navy outlines and leaves, pale rose and salmon petals, soft gold and a touch of brown in the shading around the medallion, so the overall effect from standing height is red and ivory with cool blue scattered through it. That palette places it comfortably among red Persian rugs that have to work with wood floors, dark furniture and cream walls.

Mahal Origin and Weaving Quality

Mahal rugs come from the weaving villages of the Arak district in west central Persia, the same region that produced the Sarouk and Sultanabad weaves, and they have always been made in large formats because that is what the region's looms and the export trade were built for. The weave here is a sturdy single-weft village construction with a cotton foundation and a well-spun wool pile, the combination that makes these rugs famous for lasting generations under real household traffic rather than sitting in a display room. The knot count is moderate by design, which is what lets the weaver keep the curved vine work clean without the rug becoming thin or fragile, and the reverse shows an even, regular grid with the pattern reading clearly from the back. Clipped at 3/8", the pile is full, the sides and ends are sound, and the rug lies flat and ready for a large living room or a dining table that seats 8 to 10.
