10' x 13'4" Needlepoint Rug | French Aubusson Floral Medallion | Hand-Stitched Wool Flat Weave
This is a hand-stitched needlepoint flat weave in the French Aubusson manner, worked entirely in wool on a cotton canvas foundation and finished at a generous 10x13 room size. It is a decorator's piece rather than a tribal or village weave: smooth, nearly pileless, light underfoot for its 10' x 13'4" footprint, and drawn with the restrained pastel palette that interior designers reach for when a room needs pattern without weight. Because the surface is flat and tightly stitched, the floral drawing reads with the clarity of a painted canvas, and furniture legs sit level on it without crushing a pile. Every piece we ship, including this one, comes with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely handmade.
Please Note About the Photographs:
A few faint vertical lines appear across the field in the photographs. Those are fold marks and shadows from rolled pallet storage, not wear, not fading and not damage. They relax once the piece is laid flat in the room, and every piece is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves our warehouse.
Design and Motifs
The composition is pure 18th century French salon drawing. An oval wreath of laurel and ribbon work floats at the center of the field, enclosing a loose bouquet of full blown roses, tulip shaped blooms and daisies with curling leaves and tendrils. That oval sits inside a shaped cartouche with bracketed, stepped corners, outlined in a thin rose and taupe fillet. Four cream reserves break into the field, one on each of the 4 sides, each filled with its own smaller bouquet, while the 4 corners carry the largest sprays of all, big cascading roses with acanthus scrolls and sprouting leaf fans. Carved looking rosettes sit at the midpoint and corners of the inner frame, drawn with enough shading to look three dimensional. The outer border is quiet on purpose: narrow striped guard bands, a run of crescent and bud ornament, and a solid dark brown outer edge that frames the whole field the way a picture frame finishes a painting. There is no repeating geometric lattice anywhere, which is exactly why this style sits so comfortably under traditional and transitional furniture.
A Soft Gray Blue Field With Rose and Ivory Florals
The open field is a pale gray blue, the kind of cool, chalky tone that shifts toward silver in daylight and toward warm greige under lamplight. Against it, the shaped reserves and cartouches are worked in a creamy ivory with a faint buttery cast, so the drawing separates by value rather than by hard contrast. The flowers carry the only saturated notes: deep wine rose and mauve at the heart of each bloom, fading out through dusty pink and blush to an off white edge, with occasional near white petals catching the light. Leaves and stems move through muted sage, olive and khaki green into cocoa and chestnut brown, and the scrollwork and rosettes are shaded in tan, caramel and taupe. The outer border is the darkest element on the piece, a soft chocolate brown edged with thin rose and ivory lines. Nothing shouts. The entire palette is tonal and sun washed, which makes it unusually easy to place with beige and ivory rugs already in a room, or against gray, celadon, cream or faded denim upholstery.
Origin and Weaving Quality
This piece was made in China, where workshops have specialized for decades in hand-stitched needlepoint reproductions of French Aubusson and Savonnerie designs, and where the discipline for this kind of work is genuinely high. The technique is not knotting at all: wool yarn is stitched by hand through a cotton canvas grid, one stitch at a time, with the cartoon followed stitch for stitch, which is why the floral shading can be graded so finely. The reverse photograph shows that cotton ground and the hand-bound edge tape clearly, and the detail shots show how evenly the stitch count runs across the field, with no drifting rows and no puckering. For a buyer comparing this to a knotted Oriental rug, the trade-off is simple: you give up pile depth and gain a flat, formal, almost tapestry-like surface at a 10' x 13'4" scale that would cost far more in a comparable knotted weave.
