Design and Motifs

The layout is pure Aubusson: a scalloped cartouche reserve floats in the middle of the field, holding an oval bouquet of full-blown roses, dahlias, tulip buds and small blue forget-me-nots tied together with sage and olive foliage. A second, larger garland loops around that cartouche and breaks into 4 sprays of blossom that reach toward the corners. Outside the reserve the rust inner field is filled with cream and wine comma scrolls, a quiet ground that keeps the eye on the flowers. At the 4 corners and at the center of each side sit round laurel wreath medallions enclosing small flower baskets, each flanked by tall ivory acanthus leaves that curl outward into the plain burgundy outer band. The side borders carry tied bunches of lilac and rose blossom on ivory, and the long ends finish with a carved palmette finial dropping into the band, the kind of architectural drawing that came out of 18th century French upholstery and tapestry design.

A Palette of Rust, Blush and Sage

Color is the reason this design has stayed in demand for two centuries. The center reserve is a warm blush beige that lifts to an antique ivory at the very middle, giving the bouquet a lit-from-within look. Around it the field is a muted brick rust, closer to terracotta than to true red, with the scrollwork picked out in cream and a deeper wine that reads almost brown in low light. The outer band is the darkest note in the rug, a settled burgundy brown that frames everything and hides traffic. The flowers themselves run from magenta and raspberry through dusty rose, apricot and soft peach to plain ivory, with lilac and dull purple in the leaf tips and a few stray touches of pale blue in the small buds. The foliage is a sage and olive green, deliberately greyed rather than fresh, and the acanthus scrolls move through camel, tan and light apricot shading. It is a rust, beige, pink, green and brown palette that sits comfortably against dark wood, gilt frames and creamy plaster walls.

Needlepoint Weaving in the Aubusson Tradition

Aubusson and Savonnerie were French royal manufactories, and the flat tapestry technique they perfected is now carried on almost entirely by workshops in China, where this rug was made. That is where the best hand-woven needlepoint work is done today, and the standard here is high: a fine even gauge across the whole 12 foot width, clean curved outlines on the cartouche and scrolls, and shading built up stitch by stitch in 3 or 4 tones per petal rather than blocked in flat.
