9' x 12' French Aubusson Needlepoint Rug | Ivory, Tan and Rose Floral Medallion | Flat Weave
This is a full room size French Aubusson design in the flat, tapestry-like needlepoint technique, worked entirely by hand in wool on a cotton ground. At 9' x 12' it covers a standard 9 x 12 area rug footprint with room for a sofa group or a dining table on all four legs, and because there is no knotted pile it sits almost flush to the floor, slides cleanly under doors, and reads more like an 18th century French tapestry laid down than like a thick Oriental rug. The piece is recent, never used and in perfect condition, with straight sides, square corners and crisp finished edges as shown in the corner photograph. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is handmade, along with full specifications.
Design and Motifs
The drawing follows the classic Aubusson salon formula. At the center sits a shaped cartouche medallion outlined by a beaded scalloped band, filled with a full bouquet of open roses, buds, cream peonies and green foliage. Four reserve panels radiate from it, each carrying its own smaller rose spray, and the corners break into large tan panels loaded with rococo acanthus leaves in rose, cream and soft blue that curl outward like carved plasterwork. Ribbon swags, shell palmettes and small 5 petal blossoms fill the transitions, and the whole composition mirrors perfectly along both axes. The border system is layered: a narrow braided guilloche outer band, then a light blue field of repeating leaf and lozenge motifs, then a tan inner frame carrying rose baskets at the 4 corners and floral sprays along the sides. Nothing is crowded, and the negative ivory ground is used deliberately to let each bouquet breathe.
A Palette of Ivory, Tan, Rose and Soft Blue
Color is the reason this design has stayed in demand for two centuries. The field is a warm ivory that shifts toward cream and pale champagne depending on the light, and the structural panels are a milky tan close to coffee with cream. Against that quiet base the roses carry the whole range from deep raspberry through mid rose pink to a blush that almost disappears into the ground, with ivory and buttercream blooms mixed through each bouquet. The foliage is a dusty sage and olive green rather than a bright leaf green, which keeps the florals antique rather than bright. Soft powder blue runs through the acanthus scrolls, the ribbon work and the outer guard border, giving the palette its cool note and tying the whole rug together. Nothing is saturated, nothing is loud, and the overall effect is a pale, faded, lived-in elegance that works with painted furniture, gilt, linen upholstery and wood floors in any tone.
Aubusson Design and Needlepoint Weaving Quality
Aubusson is a town in central France whose workshops produced flat tapestry-woven floor coverings for the aristocracy from the 17th century onward, and the style became the standard vocabulary for the French salon floor. This piece is an honest Made in China interpretation of that tradition, worked as hand-stitched needlepoint rather than knotted pile, which is how the great majority of good Aubusson design rugs are produced today. The quality shows in the stitch count and the shading: look at the close-up of the central bouquet and you can see 4 or 5 tones blended inside a single rose petal, which only works when the stitch is fine enough to draw a curve. The back of the rug, visible in the tag photograph, shows tight even work with no gaps or pulled rows. A flat weave of this construction is stable, low profile and easy to live with, and pieces in this style are frequently hung as wall tapestries as well as used on the floor.
