10' x 13'8" Indian Rug | Kashan Design All Over Floral | Maroon & Gold Fine Wool
This is a large, formal, room-filling piece: 10' x 13'8" of hand-knotted fine wool on a cotton foundation, drawn in the classic Kashan manner and woven in India, where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced. The scale sits squarely in the 10x14 area rug range, big enough to carry a full seating group with all four legs on the pile or a 10 seat table with chairs pulled clear. It is a true Oriental rug, knot by knot by hand, brand new and never laid in a home, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity.
Design and Motifs
The field is an all over floral lattice rather than a single medallion layout, so the drawing reads evenly from every side of the room. Thin scrolling vines link large lobed palmettes, serrated saz leaves, open rosettes and small shield-shaped blossoms, with a repeating rhythm that shifts just enough between repeats to show the weaver's hand. Look closely at the field and small birds appear tucked among the leaves, a detail that rewards anyone standing over the rug. The main border is a wide gold band carrying 8 petal rosettes and alternating floral cartouches, framed on both sides by narrow ivory guard stripes of running vine and tiny flowerheads. The corners resolve cleanly, the border turns are properly drawn, and the ends finish in plain ivory cotton fringe.
Color Palette
The field is a deep maroon that leans toward wine and plum where the light catches the pile, and it holds its saturation right across 164 inches of length without streaking. Against it, the floral work is drawn in warm gold, buttery camel, soft cream and pale apricot, with peach and salmon outlines giving each blossom a lift off the dark ground. Sage and forest green leaves and small black-centered rosettes supply the contrast, and those black accents keep the palette from going soft. The wide border reverses the balance: a glowing honey gold ground with maroon, ivory, green and near-black motifs, so the rug frames itself. It is a warm, traditional color story that works with mahogany and walnut furniture, cream walls and brass lighting.
Origin and Weaving Quality
India's weaving centers have spent decades refining the classical city repertoire, and this rug is a good example of what that discipline produces: a hand-knotted cotton warp and weft, a fine wool pile clipped low enough to keep the outlines crisp, and a back with even, tight knot rows visible where the corner is folded over. The wool takes dye cleanly and has the slight sheen you want in a formal room rug, and the handle is firm rather than floppy, which matters in a piece this size because it will lie flat and stay flat. Nothing here is machine work or tufted: the fringe is the extension of the warp, the selvedges are wrapped by hand, and the weave is consistent from end to end.
