10'5" x 14'7" Indian Kashan Design Rug | All Over Floral Field | Fine Wool Dense Weave

This is a brand new, never used room size piece measuring 10'5" x 14'7", hand-knotted in India on a cotton foundation with a fine wool pile packed tight enough that the back reads crisp and the face feels firm underfoot. Photograph 12 shows the workshop tag and the tape laid across the border, and photographs 6 and 7 show the fold and the roll, where the density of the weave and the clean, even clipping are easiest to judge. It is a full formal drawing, not a simplified commercial version: an all over floral field in deep red with a wide ivory main border and four narrower guard stripes, the kind of complete layout that a 10 by 15 footprint gives a weaver room to resolve properly. As an Oriental rug bought direct from the importer, it arrives with our certificate of authenticity confirming the hand-knotted construction, the wool pile and the size.

Design and Motifs

The field carries an all over floral design with no central medallion, so the pattern repeats in mirrored pairs from the center line out to all 4 corners. Lattice vines of ivory and pale blue arc across the red ground, tied at each junction to serrated palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, lotus heads and small cypress-like leaf sprays, with tiny white star blossoms scattered in the open ground between them, visible in the close-up photographs 4 and 11. The drawing belongs to the Kashan design vocabulary that Indian workshops have woven for generations: curved vine work, layered petals shaded from light blue through beige into black outlines, and split leaves wrapping around each flower head. The ivory main border sets large black-ground rosette cartouches against a scrolling crimson vine, and the inner and outer guard stripes run in teal, sage and salmon with repeating pink and coral blossoms, seen in detail in photographs 8 and 10. A plain red outer edge finishes the rug, and the ends are plain woven and finished with long ivory cotton fringe.

A Deep Red Field Cooled by Ivory, Blue and Green

The dominant color is a deep true red, reading close to burgundy in the straight overhead shot and warming to a brighter crimson where the light catches the pile at an angle. Against it, ivory does most of the work: the main border, the vine tracery and the highlights inside each flower are all ivory, which keeps a large red rug from going heavy. Light blue is the second color of the field, used for whole palmettes and for the outer petals of the rosettes, and it cools the red noticeably from a standing distance. Green appears in two registers, a soft sage in the guard stripes and a deeper bottle green inside the border rosettes and leaf work. Black is used sparingly and deliberately, as the ground of the large border cartouches and as fine outlines that hold every motif in place, while beige and a muted salmon pink fill the transitions so no color change lands abruptly. The overall effect is a formal red and ivory scheme with enough blue and green in it to sit comfortably with wood tones, dark leather and antique furniture.

India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this rug is a clear example of why. The weaving centers of northern India have spent decades reproducing classical city designs on the same upright looms, with a cotton warp and weft and a hand-spun wool pile, and the best of that output holds knot count, color register and straight selvages across a piece this large. Here the weave is dense and the pile clipped low enough that the fine vine work stays legible, which is exactly the test an all over floral design sets.
