10' x 14'1" Indian Agra Rug | Ivory All Over Floral, Tabriz-Style Drawing | New Hand-Knotted Wool

This is a brand new, never used 10' x 14'1" hand-knotted wool rug woven in India in the Agra tradition, tagged F-4263 in our Freeport warehouse. The field is a warm ivory that reads almost sand in daylight, filled edge to edge with an all over floral design of open rosettes, feathered palmettes and thin scrolling vines. Because there is no central medallion, the pattern keeps working when furniture sits on top of it, which is exactly what you want at this size. The pile is dense and evenly clipped, the sides are firm and the cotton fringe is hand-tied at both ends. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity confirming it is a genuine hand-knotted piece.

Design and Motifs

The drawing follows the classical Tabriz-style floral repeat that Agra workshops have reinterpreted for generations: large sunburst rosettes and 8 petal blossoms anchored to a lattice of curving vine, with serrated leaves, small cruciform buds and tiny paired birds tucked between them. Three border bands frame the field. The main band alternates broad ivory rosettes with olive oak leaves and slender cypress uprights, the inner guard runs a rhythm of small florets and reversed leaf hooks, and the outer band carries a running rust wave on a gold ground. Look at the corner photographs and you will see the mauve corner rosettes that mark each of the 4 corners, a nice piece of resolution work where the border turns. The curvilinear line is drawn cleanly rather than stiffly, which is the mark of a good cartoon and a weaver who kept the count honest across 14 feet.

A Quiet Palette of Ivory, Olive and Rust

The ground is a soft ivory to beige with a faint cream shimmer where the wool catches light. Over it the weaver placed olive and sage green rosettes, tan and camel palmettes, chestnut brown leaf work and thin rust outlines that give the vines their definition. Rust appears again as small cross shaped buds and as the wave motif in the outer band, while the main border shifts to a warm gold that separates the field from the room. The mauve corner flowers are the one cool note in an otherwise warm scheme. Nothing here is high contrast, so the rug behaves like a large neutral: it sits easily with off white walls, natural oak, brass and washed linen, and it will not fight patterned upholstery.

Woven in India: Agra Quality at 10' x 14'1"

India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and Agra in particular has kept a workshop culture of fine cotton warps, hand-spun wool and carefully drawn floral cartoons. This piece is a good example: a tight, level weave that shows clean knot rows on the reverse, a pile with enough body to take real traffic, and finishing that stays square over a 10 foot width. If you are comparing this to a hand-knotted piece from another weaving country, our guide to what separates a Persian rug from an Oriental rug is worth a read. For scale, see the rest of our 10 x 14 rugs to judge how this one sits against other pieces in the same footprint.
