10' x 14' Modern Bamboo Silk Rug | Raised Ombre Lattice Design | Brand New, Made in India

This 10' x 14' hand-knotted rug is a contemporary piece with an unusually tactile surface: the lattice is not printed or simply drawn in color, it is carved, with the bamboo silk pile clipped at two different heights so the pattern stands up off the ground. Run a hand across it and you feel the design before you read it. The field moves from pale silver at one end into deep indigo at the other, with no border at all, which gives it the quiet, gallery-like presence that works with modern furniture the way a traditional medallion rug never quite does. At this scale it is a genuine room-defining piece, and it belongs with the rest of our 10x14 area rugs. It is brand new, never used, in perfect condition, and ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a hand-knotted piece.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The bright and dark patches you see across the surface are the natural sheen of bamboo silk catching the light at different pile angles, not staining, wear or fading. A lustrous pile like this reads almost silver from one direction and near-black from the other, and it will shift again as the light moves through your room. Every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves our warehouse.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is an all-over stepped lattice: elongated hexagonal cartouches linked end to end, each outlined by a narrow ridge and each stepped rather than curved, so every line advances in small right angles like pixels. Because the outlines are woven at a lower pile height than the panels they enclose, the whole field reads as low relief. Toward the lower end the geometry breaks apart deliberately, the clean cartouches dissolving into soft cloud-like blots of dark indigo that scatter across the last few feet, a controlled abstraction that keeps a 140 square foot rug from ever looking repetitive. There is no border and no medallion. The pattern simply runs to the selvage and stops, which is what makes this an Oriental rug in construction and a thoroughly modern one in intent.

The Blue and Silver Palette

The color story is a single gradient handled with real restraint. One end of the field is a pale, almost frosted silver grey, cool and luminous, with the lattice outlines picked out in a warmer taupe grey. Moving down the rug the ground deepens through pewter and steel blue into denim, then into a dense midnight indigo where the carved motifs read nearly black in shadow and flare to gunmetal where the light hits the pile. Because bamboo silk takes dye with a high sheen, the same square foot can look slate grey from the doorway and deep navy from the sofa. The effect is a blue rug that never sits flat, and it is easy to place against white walls, oak or walnut floors, pale linen upholstery, or the charcoals and brass of a more tailored interior. Anyone shopping the navy blue and blues range should see this one in person if they can.

Woven in India: Origin and Quality

India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and we say that without hedging. The weaving belt around Bhadohi and Mirzapur has the loom capacity, the dyeing infrastructure and the design studios to produce pieces like this at a size and consistency few other centers attempt. This one is knotted by hand, row by row, on a cotton foundation, with the two-level pile achieved by hand-clipping the surface after weaving rather than by any mechanical shearing. That carving step is slow and unforgiving, since a single misjudged pass ruins the crispness of a motif, and it is the main reason a rug like this costs what it does. The result is a hard-wearing, low-shedding floor covering with silk-like luster, and it sits comfortably alongside the rest of our modern and contemporary rugs.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
