10' x 14' Persian Kashan Rug | Navy Medallion on Deep Red Floral Field | Excellent Condition
This 10' x 14' Persian Kashan rug is the classic city formula worked at true room size: a deep red field of flowering vine, a navy lobed medallion floating at the center, and navy spandrels anchoring the 4 corners. It is hand-knotted on a cotton foundation in soft, lustrous wool, and the back photograph shows an even, tight, regular knot line with no repairs and no reweaves. The pile stands full and upright throughout, and the ivory cotton fringe is original and intact at both ends. If you are working through 10' x 14' Persian rugs for a large living room or a long dining room, this is the drawing and the palette most buyers picture first when they think of a Persian Kashan rug. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming origin, materials and hand-knotted construction.
Design and Motifs
The center holds a small ivory cartouche-shaped medallion with a sky blue rosette at its heart, set inside a stepped navy medallion outlined in ivory and filled with palmettes, curling leaves and paired cloud bands. Pendants extend above and below it, each finished with a hooked finial. Around that, the red field is covered edge to edge with a curvilinear vine carrying rosettes, buds, serrated leaves and small vase-like palmettes, drawn small enough that the pattern reads as texture from standing height and as individual flowers when you sit down. The 4 corner spandrels reverse the scheme in navy with ivory arabesque scrollwork and a sky blue inner field. The main border is navy, running a pink and rose vine through alternating gold palmettes and rose-filled cartouches, framed on both sides by narrow floral guard stripes and a fine ivory meander that keeps the whole composition contained.
The Red and Navy Color Story
The field is a true deep madder red with a slight cool, cherry cast rather than a brick or rust tone, and it shifts noticeably with the nap: warmer and brighter from one end, deeper and more wine-like from the other. Against it the borders and spandrels sit in a very dark navy that reads nearly black in low light and opens into blue where the light hits the pile directly. The drawing is carried in ivory, which gives the vine its outline and keeps the two dark grounds from merging, and the flower heads bring in sky blue, rose pink, soft gold, camel brown and a quiet sage green. Ivory is used sparingly and deliberately, in the center medallion and the 4 corner spandrels, so the eye travels to the middle and then out to the corners. It is a warm, formal palette that sits well with dark wood, brass, and cream or oatmeal upholstery.
Kashan Weaving in Central Persia
Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its looms trace back to the Safavid court workshops that set the standard for curvilinear Persian design. The town is known for soft, lustrous local wool and for weavers who work from a cartoon with enough knots to render a curved line cleanly, which is why the medallion here comes off round rather than stepped and the vine keeps flowing through the corners. Kashan is also the most recognizable Persian design in America: when you watch Shark Tank there is a Persian Kashan on the floor. This example is city workshop weaving, not village work, with a firm handle, straight sides, and the kind of even, disciplined knotting across 14 feet of length that only comes from a well-managed loom.
