9'10" x 13'5" Persian Kashan Rug | Navy Floral Field, Red Medallion | Excellent Condition

Measuring 9'10" x 13'5", this hand-knotted Kashan sits in the 10x13 Persian rugs bracket that most formal living rooms and full dining sets are actually shopping for. It reverses the usual Kashan formula: instead of a red ground with a navy medallion, the field here is deep navy blue, packed corner to corner with floral vinework, and the medallion at center is madder red with an ivory heart. The pile is 3/8" wool on a cotton foundation, full and evenly worn across the whole surface, with clean sides and original fringe at both ends, and the condition is excellent. Design and Motifs

The center is a lobed red medallion enclosing an ivory cartouche, and inside that a sky blue field holding a single 8 petal rosette, the kind of layered drawing a Kashan workshop uses to pull the eye straight to the middle of a long rug. Slender red pendants run off the top and bottom of the medallion toward the ends, and the same red repeats in the 4 corner spandrels, each filled with ivory palmettes and curling split leaves. Between them the navy field never repeats mechanically: palmettes, rosettes, feathery serrated leaves and thin vine scrolls weave through one another at close spacing, with small ivory blossoms placed as breathing room. The main border is red, carrying alternating palmettes and rosettes on a continuous vine, and it is framed by paired guard stripes in light blue and ivory that step the pattern down neatly to the selvage.

Color: Navy Ground, Madder Red and Ivory

The ground is a true deep navy, dark enough to read almost black at the edges of the room and blue under direct light, which is what gives the floral work its contrast. Against it the red is a warm madder tone, used for the medallion, the spandrels and the wide border so the three elements tie together across the length of the rug. Ivory does the outlining: it defines the medallion center, the palmettes in the corners and the fine stems threading the field, and it keeps the dense drawing from turning into a blur. Supporting shades include a soft sky blue in the rosettes and guard stripes, touches of saffron gold, a muted rose, and small greens in the leaves and scattered flower heads. Kashan: The Town and the Weave

Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its looms trace back to the Safavid court workshops that set the standard for the medallion and vine layout still used today. Local wool is soft and lustrous, the foundation is cotton, and the weave is a city weave rather than village work, which is why the curved outlines here stay smooth instead of stepping. The reverse of the rug tells the same story: a tight, regular grid of knots with the pattern legible from the back.
