11'6" x 17'6" Oversize India Rug | Multi-Color Diamond Panel Design | Soft Vegetable Dye Wool

This is a true palace piece: 11'6" x 17'6" of hand-knotted wool, woven in one piece on a wide loom, with a diamond lattice field where every single panel carries its own ground color and its own floral drawing. Most oversize rugs this large repeat one motif to fill the space; this one does the opposite, holding perhaps 90 separate compartments in balance without the eye ever losing the grid. It is a traditional Oriental rug made in India, in perfect condition with full pile and a burgundy wool edge finish, and it sits squarely in the 12 x 18 rugs bracket for a great room or a long formal dining space. It ships with our certificate of authenticity.

Please Note About the Photographs:

A few soft fold lines and shadows show in the photographs where this rug has been stored folded on a pallet. They are not wear, not fading and not damage. They relax out once the rug is laid flat, and every rug leaves us professionally steamed and pressed. The first flat-scan image also reads lighter and cooler than the rug does in person; the floor photographs taken under normal room light are the truer guide to the color.

Design and Motifs

The field is a diagonal diamond lattice, each diamond drawn as a self-contained garden panel. Inside most of them sits a single 8 petal star rosette on a stem of curling vine, flanked by small quatrefoil blossoms and leaf sprays, with tiny lozenge cartouches at the top and bottom points. No two neighboring diamonds share a ground color, so the pattern reads as a mosaic of tiles rather than a repeat. The main border is a rose-red ground carrying alternating elements: ivory and camel octagonal cartouches filled with 8 pointed stars on aubergine, and long lobed panels of arched floral sprays. Framing that border on both sides are narrow guard stripes of a running Greek key meander in soft aqua, a row of paisley-like boteh cups in gold and rose, and a fine ivory band of crossed floral sprigs. Four corners resolve cleanly, and the outermost finish is a plain burgundy wool edge that frames the whole composition like a mat around a print.

A Palette Built From Many Colors at Once

The unifying tone across the field is warm antique gold, ranging from pale honey and ivory cream through camel and old brass, with gentle abrash where the dye lot shifts from one row of diamonds to the next. Against that gold ground, the accent panels bring in deep burgundy and wine, dark aubergine and plum, navy and a softer denim blue, sage and olive green, dusty rose, salmon, lilac and mushroom taupe. The drawing inside each panel is picked out in the opposite direction: ivory vine on the dark diamonds, aubergine and rust vine on the pale ones, with small hits of light aqua that lift the whole surface. Everything is muted in the way soft vegetable dye tonality tends to be, nothing raw or high-contrast, which is why a rug holding this many hues still reads as calm. Buyers hunting multi-colored rugs that can bridge several palettes in one open room should look hard at this one, because it picks up gold, red, blue and green all at once.

Made in India: Weaving and Quality

India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and we say that plainly: the workshops there have the loom width, the trained weavers and the dye discipline to execute a traditional panel design at this scale. A 138" width means a loom built and warped specifically for palace sizes, with several weavers working shoulder to shoulder across the same row for months on end, which is why the lattice stays true from one selvedge to the other instead of drifting. The pile is wool on a cotton foundation, clipped to a medium height that shows the drawing crisply while leaving enough body to take traffic in a great room or a long dining space. Handled in person the back is even and the knotting regular, the edges are firm, and the pile is full with no thin areas, consistent with the perfect condition noted above.
