13'8" x 23'10" Jaipur Rug | Ivory Panel Garden Design | Oversize, Made in India
At 13'8" x 23'10" this rug covers roughly 326 square feet, which puts it squarely in the palace class of oversize rugs that very few looms are built wide enough to handle. It is hand-knotted in wool over a cotton foundation, with a clipped, even pile and a straight, true rectangle across nearly 24 feet of length, which is the hardest thing to achieve at this scale. The condition is excellent, the pile is full from end to end, and the selvedges and fringe are intact and original. It ships with a certificate of authenticity, and despite the weight it ships free to all 50 states.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The first photograph was shot under warm showroom light, which pushes the ivory ground toward gold and darkens the green panels. The third, fourth and fifth photographs are closer to the rug in daylight: a soft cream ivory ground with sage green, camel and walnut detail. The color is consistent across the whole rug, and what looks like a tonal shift in the wide shots is camera angle and light, not variation in the weave.
Design and Motifs
The field is a compartment garden: a pale lattice of thin vine bands divides the ivory ground into rows of hexagonal and octagonal panels, each one centered by a rosette. The centers alternate on a deliberate rhythm, an 8 petal rosette in dark navy, then a camel medallion with a serrated edge, then a plain ivory disc with a small flowerhead, so the eye never settles into a single repeat even though the drawing is a strict all over design. Between the panels sit small palmettes, curling acanthus leaves and paired birds worked in fine outline. The border system is unusually complete for a rug this size: a main band of alternating square cartouches and rosettes flanked by 4 narrow guard stripes of meandering vine, each stripe outlined in a different tone so the frame reads crisply from across a large room.
The Ivory Palette and Its Accents
The dominant color is ivory, a warm cream rather than a white, and it carries about 70 percent of the surface. Against it the weavers set sage and olive green in the panel grounds and leafwork, camel and honey gold in the medallions and the outer border, and walnut brown in the vine lattice and the outlines. Dark navy, nearly black in low light, anchors roughly every third rosette and keeps the composition from floating. The close-up photographs reveal the quieter accents that make the rug worth looking at up close: pale sky blue leaves, small burgundy tulips, soft rose petals and pinpoints of cream outlining. Because the ground is neutral and the accents are earthy rather than saturated, the rug sits comfortably with oak, walnut and stone floors and does not dictate the rest of the room.
Jaipur Weaving and the Quality of This Piece
The Jaipour design takes its name from Jaipur in Rajasthan, the workshop city that revived classical compartment and garden drawing for the modern market and still trains some of the most accurate hand-knotters working anywhere. India is now where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted weaving is produced, and this rug is a fair example of why: the vine lattice holds a consistent width across 164 inches, the panel rows stay square over 286 inches of length, and the wool has been clipped low enough for the fine outlining to stay legible. The back, shown in the final photograph, is tight and regular, with no loose or skipped knots along the border turn. If you are weighing this against a traditional city weave, the guide to what separates a Persian rug from an Oriental rug explains the distinction plainly.
