Design and Motifs

The layout is a classic Soltanabad all over composition with no central medallion: a lattice of thick, angular vine stems that sweeps across the field and anchors a rhythm of large motifs. Big 8 and 10 petal rosettes sit at the center of each panel, flanked by long serrated saz leaves in green and pale blue, upright lotus palmettes in cream and blush, and crisp shield palmettes drawn in navy outline. Between them the weaver has scattered small cruciform blossoms, tiny buds and curled cloud tendrils so the coral ground never looks empty. The drawing is deliberately bold and slightly angular rather than finely curved, which is what gives this pattern its village character and its presence in a very large room. The border system runs 5 bands deep: a wide ivory main border of navy and brick cartouche palmettes alternating with green rosettes and pink leaf forms, framed by sage green guard stripes with running leaf and vine, then narrow ivory outer stripes and a solid brick red selvage. Corners resolve cleanly, and the pattern registration holds along the full 249 inch length.

The Coral Red, Ivory and Green Palette

The field is a warm coral red with real depth to it, closer to terracotta and brick in the floor photographs and gently variegated across the width, the natural abrash you expect from wool dyed in batches. Against that ground the pattern is drawn in a soft, decorative range rather than high contrast: ivory and butter cream for the palmettes and blossoms, a muted sage and celadon blue for the serrated leaves and the larger shield forms, true grass green in the small leaf clusters, olive and camel in the vine stems, and blush pink at the heart of many rosettes. Deep navy and indigo appear only in short strokes, in the curled leaf motifs and the outlines of the big palmettes, and those dark notes are what keep the whole field from going flat. The main border reverses the scheme, putting the same navy, brick, green and pink motifs on an ivory ground so the border frames the coral instead of competing with it. Overall the tone is warm and forgiving, an easy palette to build a room around, and it sits comfortably with wood floors, stone and brass.
