11'9" x 15' Aubusson Design Rug | French Floral Medallion | Rose Garlands & Deep Green Border
This is a room-filling 11'9" x 15' Aubusson in the full 18th century French manner, hand-woven in wool on a cotton foundation and finished in excellent, never used condition. The drawing is the whole point of a piece like this: a huge ivory oval medallion floating inside concentric bands of gold ribbon and rose garland, framed by a deep sage green ground that pulls the eye straight to the center. Because the weave is flat and the surface sits low, the design reads with the clarity of a painting rather than the plush of a thick pile, which is exactly why decorators reach for this look in formal rooms. At 141" x 180" it belongs in the oversize 12x15 rug class, large enough to carry a long dining table or a full seating group with furniture fully on the rug. Every piece we ship leaves with a certificate of authenticity.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The soft diagonal shadows visible across the center of a few photos are fold marks from storage on the pallet. They are not wear, not fading and not damage. They relax out once the rug is laid flat, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it ships.
Design and Motifs
The field is built in layers. At the heart sits an ivory cartouche holding a loose bouquet of roses, bellflowers and trailing foliage, ringed first by a scrolling gold vine band, then by a full circular garland of open roses and buds, then by a wide ribbed collar of feathered acanthus. Four spandrels fan out from that oval, each one filled with delicate latticework and a swag of roses tied off with a pale blue ribbon. The 4 corners of the inner panel carry heavy scrolling strapwork and shell cartouches drawn in tan and cream, while small oval rose wreaths with trailing bows sit at the midpoint of each side. The main border runs a diamond lattice of stylized leaves on the green ground, closed by a narrow beaded gold guard stripe, and the outer border repeats a chain of ribbon-tied rosettes and floral bouquets. It is a densely programmed, deeply French composition, and the weaver held the curves and the symmetry across 15 feet without a wobble.
A Beige and Sage Green Palette Built on Roses
The dominant reading is beige: a warm, milky beige that shifts to clean ivory in the medallion center and to a deeper sand and honey gold in the ribbon bands and acanthus collars. Against that, the ground of the inner panel and the main border is a muted sage to forest green, slightly dusty rather than bright, which is what gives the rug its quiet, aged look instead of a showroom glare. The flowers carry the color story: coral and rose pink cabbage roses, a few deeper raspberry blooms, buds in apricot and cream, foliage in olive, moss and soft celadon, and small clusters of pale cornflower blue and lilac scattered through the garlands. Ribbons are woven in a chalky powder blue and an off-white that reads almost silver. The whole palette is low contrast and soft-focused, so the rug sits easily with cream upholstery, walnut and mahogany furniture, gilt frames and painted trim without fighting anything in the room.
Woven in China in the French Aubusson Tradition
Aubusson is a French town, but the tradition of copying its flat tapestry-woven court carpets by hand has been carried on for decades by the workshops of northern China, and they do it extremely well. This piece is made in China to that standard: a fine, even flat weave with crisp color changes, no muddiness where one shade meets the next, and a finished back that shows the same discipline as the face, as you can see in the tag photo. This is genuine hand-woven work, not a printed or machine-made copy, and it sits squarely in the Oriental rug family of handmade goods. Low profile weaves like this one also solve real problems: chairs slide easily at a dining table, doors clear without trimming, and the rug lies flat under heavy furniture. If you are shopping the broader Oriental rugs selection for something formal at this scale, a clean 11'9" x 15' Aubusson in beige and green is about as versatile as the category gets.
