This is a large, quiet, softly colored room piece: a hand-woven Aubusson flat weave measuring 12'1" x 15'1", worked in wool on a cotton foundation with no pile to speak of, so the drawing reads like a tapestry laid on the floor. The palette is wheat and ivory with gold, faded sage and dusty rose, and the whole surface sits almost flush with the floor, which makes it easy to live with under a dining table, a long sofa run or a bed. At just over 182 square feet it belongs with the oversize 12x15 rugs rather than with standard room sizes, and it is unused, in perfect condition, with the original weaver's tag still attached. A certificate of authenticity ships with the rug.

Design and Motifs

The composition is pure 18th century French salon drawing. At center sits an oval wreath of open roses, daisies and small buds, tied at top and bottom with ribbon bows whose streamers trail out into the open ground. Four slender columns of leafy vine rise on either side of the wreath and frame the field, with rose sprays scattered at the corners of the inner panel and a garland running along each end. Thin gold and ivory guard stripes separate the field from a wide ivory main border filled with big cream acanthus scrolls, each one curling around a rosette boss and punctuated by coral ribbon tips and small flower bouquets at the corners. Outside that, a lattice chain guard band gives way to a broad plain wheat outer border, roughly 12 inches deep, that acts as a mat and makes the patterned area float. There is no medallion outline, no cartouche and no repeat: the drawing is symmetrical on both axes and reads as one continuous picture rather than a tiled pattern.

Color: Wheat, Gold, Sage and Rose

Everything here is turned down a few stops. The plain outer border is a warm wheat gold, slightly darker and drier than the field, and the inner ground shifts to a pale ivory cream that picks up a buttery cast under warm light. The foliage is a muted olive sage, more gray than green, drawn in two or three close tones so leaves shade into one another instead of standing out. The flowers carry the only saturation: soft blush pink petals with deeper rose and a touch of coral red at the heart of the larger roses, and the ribbons are a clear salmon coral that traces through the border scrolls. Small pale blue-white daisy centers appear throughout the field and are the coolest note on the rug. The acanthus work in the border is ivory on ivory with tan and putty shading, which is why it reads as carved relief rather than as pattern. This is a genuinely neutral floor: wheat, cream, olive and rose will sit with oak, walnut, linen upholstery and antique gilt without fighting anything in the room.

Origin and Weaving Quality

Aubusson is a town in central France whose royal manufactory made pileless tapestry floor coverings for chateaux and city salons from the 17th century onward, and that drawing vocabulary of rose wreaths, ribbons and acanthus is what the name means today. This example was hand woven in China, where the flat weave tradition has been kept alive at a scale and a level of finish the French workshops no longer produce, and the workmanship is honest: even tension across more than 12 feet of width, clean color transitions in the shading, tidy joins where color areas meet, and a firm selvage with plain cotton fringe at both ends, visible in the back photograph. A flat weave of this size is a real feat of loom control, since there is no pile to hide unevenness. The result is a thin, dense, reversible-feeling floor piece that sits flat under doors and furniture, and it belongs squarely in the wider family of hand-woven Oriental rug work rather than in any machine-made category.
