12'10" x 15'7" Ziegler Oriental Rug | Brown Multicolor Lattice Field | Natural Wool, New
At 12'10" x 15'7" this is a room filling weave, made for a floor that swallows anything smaller. The ground is a deep chocolate brown, and across it runs an unbroken grid of lobed quatrefoil medallions, each one dyed a slightly different shade so the surface reads as a hand set mosaic rather than a mechanical repeat. The pile is natural hand spun wool with the quiet sheen that only unbleached fleece takes, and the drawing is outlined throughout in ivory. The rug is new and has never been walked on, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming it is 100% hand-knotted. Among oversize rugs this one is unusually settled: dark enough to anchor heavy furniture, varied enough that a large open room never goes flat.
Design and Motifs
There is no central medallion here. Instead the weaver has drawn a true all over design, a lattice of lobed quatrefoil cartouches set corner to corner so the field behaves like a tiled floor. Inside each cartouche sits an 8 petal rosette ringed by curling leaf forms and small palmettes, all outlined in ivory so the shape lifts cleanly off the brown. The spaces between the medallions are not left empty: they carry their own miniature lattice of scrolling vine, cross forms and starburst florets, which is what gives the field its density in the close up photographs. The border is deliberately quiet, a plain brown band framed by a fine navy hairline guard stripe and a narrow ivory line, so nothing competes with the field. Because the medallion colors are distributed at random rather than in strict rows, the eye keeps moving across the 15'7" length instead of locking onto a repeat.
A Brown Ground Lit by Gold, Green and Beige
The field color is a warm coffee brown that shifts between a lighter cocoa and a near espresso depending on how the light falls, a natural abrash that comes from hand spun, hand dyed yarn. Against it the medallions run through mustard and antique gold, olive and soft sage green, sand beige, cream and chalk ivory, with a scattering of slate blue, pale sky blue, dusty coral and muted salmon that keeps the palette from turning monochrome. Every motif is drawn in ivory, which acts as the unifying line and makes the whole surface read lighter than the brown ground would suggest. The plain outer border repeats the field brown, cut by a thin navy guard stripe visible in the corner photographs, and the fringe is natural ivory. In practice this is an earth tone rug: it sits with walnut, leather, bronze and cream without argument, and the cooler blue and green tiles pick up whatever blue is already in the room.
Ziegler Weaving and Pakistani Workshop Quality
This piece was hand-knotted in Pakistan, where the Ziegler style has been kept alive by workshops around Lahore that specialize in large decorative weaves for Western rooms. The name comes from the 19th century Ziegler house, which commissioned softened, open, furnishing friendly patterns for European and American buyers, and the formula still holds: hand spun wool, gentler vegetable dye tones, a low even clip and an uncluttered border. What separates good Ziegler work from filler is the wool and the finishing, and both are right here, a dense even knot across the full 12'10" width, straight sides, tight flat selvedges and a pile that already has sheen before a single foot has touched it. Buyers comparing this to Persian weaving should read our guide on what actually separates a Persian rug from an Oriental rug, because in this size and this design tradition, Pakistan is where the best contemporary hand-knotted work is being done.
