12' x 18'2" Modern Indian Rug | Blue Rainbow Ombre Lattice | Hand-Knotted Wool
Opened out to its full 12' x 18'2", this modern Indian rug reads almost like weather: horizontal bands of silver, denim and deep indigo drifting across the floor with no border and no medallion to interrupt them. It is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, finished with a neat blue overcast edge and a short ivory fringe, and it is brand new and never used. Every piece we ship carries our certificate of authenticity. At this scale it sits squarely in the oversized rugs bracket, and buyers shopping 12 x 18 rugs already know why: a room that defeats a 10x14 is exactly the room this was woven for.
Design and Motifs
The weaver's label calls it design 282, and the drawing is one continuous idea carried from end to end. A small-scale diamond lattice runs across the entire field, each diamond outlined by single knots of pale wool so the grid never hardens into a stamped repeat. Over that lattice the weaver laid broad horizontal bands, some open and hazy, others tightened into dense cross-hatch rows where the pale knots crowd together. There is no border, no corner spandrel, no central anchor, which is what keeps a rug of this length from feeling formal. Seen from the end, as in the angled photograph, the bands compress into stripes; seen from above they soften back into gradient. It is an all-over design in the truest sense, and it can be turned 180 degrees or rotated for wear without losing its balance.
A Field Built From Blue
Look closely and the blue is not one color at all. The lightest bands are a chalky silver-grey with a cool cast, almost the color of worn denim washed thin. They deepen through a mid steel blue into stormy slate, and then, in the tightest bands, into an indigo so dark it reads near black in shadow, as the folded close-ups show. Threading through all of it are tiny knots of ivory and near-white wool that make up the lattice lines and give the surface its glitter. The overcast side finish is a mid blue, and the fringe is natural undyed ivory. Because the tones shift band by band, the rug picks up whatever light is in the room, going pale and silvery under daylight and sinking into navy at night. It sits comfortably with the rest of our navy blue and blue rugs, though few of them carry this much tonal range in a single field.
Made in India: Contemporary Hand-Knotting
India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this piece is a fair sample of why. The back photograph shows an even, tightly packed knot grid with the pattern reading as clearly from the reverse as from the pile side, which is the honest test of a hand-knotted weave. The wool has been clipped low and level, so the lattice stays crisp across nearly 18 feet without wander, and a rug of this length holds a straight edge only if the loom tension was managed properly from the first row. This is an Oriental rug in the technical sense and a thoroughly modern one in the visual sense, which is the combination most of our modern and contemporary rugs buyers are actually after: real knots, real wool, nothing nostalgic in the drawing.
