12' x 14'7" Oversize Modern Wool Rug | Slate Blue & Gray Rainbow Ombre | Brand New
At 12' x 14'7" this is a true floor-filling piece, hand-knotted one knot at a time in 100% wool on a cotton foundation and never used. There is no medallion and no border: the whole field is built from horizontal bands of slate blue, pewter gray and pale ice blue that shift in brightness the way light moves across water, with a fine diamond lattice knotted over the top. Rugs that cover this much ground usually shout, and among oversized rugs this one is unusually quiet, which is exactly why designers reach for it under long sectionals and 10 seat dining tables. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is hand-knotted, the fiber content and the country of origin.
Design and Motifs
The workshop calls the drawing Rainbow, and the logic is simple and modern: bands of graduated tone run the full 12' width, some only a few inches deep, others close to a foot, so the eye reads the rug as weather rather than as pattern. Over those bands sits a continuous small-scale diamond trellis, each diamond outlined in a darker knot and filled with a lighter one, which is what gives the surface its tweedy, almost denim-like texture in the close-up photos. In the darker bands the lattice nearly disappears into the ground; in the paler bands it stands out crisply, so the same motif reads three or four different ways across the length of the rug. There is no border at all, the pattern running straight off all 4 edges, which makes the piece sit flat and calm in a room instead of framing the floor. It is a contemporary drawing with real hand-knotted depth, the kind of piece that reads as an Oriental rug in construction and as a modern textile in design.
The Slate Blue and Gray Color Story
The dominant note is slate blue, a cool mid-blue with gray behind it rather than purple, and it runs the whole spectrum here. At the darker end the bands deepen into charcoal and a near-black indigo, so dense that the lattice shows only as a shadow. In the middle range the tone settles into pewter and gunmetal gray with blue flickering through it. At the lightest end the bands lift into a pale ice blue, almost sky, with silver-white knots scattered through the lattice points, and those pale stripes are what keep a rug this size from feeling heavy. Because the wool is hand-spun and dyed in small lots, each band carries natural abrash, subtle striation within a single color, visible as faint horizontal streaks of lighter blue across the gray. The overall impression from across a room is a soft denim or raw silk gray-blue; up close it separates into 4 or 5 distinct tones. It works with cool whites, warm walnut, black metal and brass alike, and it sits comfortably alongside both blue rugs and gray palettes already in a space.
Made in India: Weaving and Quality
This rug was hand-knotted in India, and that is said with confidence: India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, with weavers trained in the same knot-by-knot tradition applied to modern drawings. A 12' width means a loom wide enough for 2 or 3 weavers to work side by side, row by row, tying each knot by hand onto a cotton warp and beating the wefts down between passes, which is why the back photograph shows an even, legible grid of knots rather than the uniform machine-flat reverse of a power-loomed piece. The pile is clipped low and tight, the right choice for a lattice this fine, and the wool is a sturdy hand-spun yarn with enough lanolin to resist soil under dining chairs and traffic lanes. The side cords are hand-wrapped and the ends are finished with a short ivory fringe, both visible in the detail shots. It is a piece of serious modern and contemporary weaving, brand new, never laid in a home.
