14'7" x 20'3" Moroccan Design Oversize Rug | Blue Gray Checkerboard | Hand-Knotted Natural Wool

At 14'7" x 20'3" this is a true palace floor, a hand-knotted wool piece drawn in the Moroccan idiom and built for rooms where most inventory simply runs out of length. The whole surface is a quiet field of small checkerboard squares in denim blue, slate and warm gray, with no border at all, so the pattern runs corner to corner like woven cloth rather than a framed composition. It is one of the more interesting modern and contemporary hand-knotted rugs we carry in this scale, and among our oversize area rugs it is one of the few that reads calm instead of busy. Brand new, never used, shipped with a certificate of authenticity, and delivered free anywhere in the 50 states despite the freight weight.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The full overhead photograph was shot in flat daylight and reads cooler and grayer than the rug does in a room. The close-up images are the truer guide to the denim blue, taupe and charcoal actually present in the pile. Every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it ships.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is a staggered grid of small squares, each block roughly 2 to 3 inches across, offset row by row so the eye never settles into a rigid checkerboard. Half the squares are woven in high pile and half sit low and flat, which means the pattern is as much relief as color: you can see it change as you walk around the room. That texture is the Moroccan signature, borrowed from Berber village weaving and scaled up here into a continuous all over field. There is no medallion, no spandrel and no border, which is exactly why it works with modern furniture, and it sits comfortably alongside our other geometric rugs without borrowing anything from classical formula.

The Blue and Gray Palette

Colour here is built from many closely related yarns rather than a few flat tones. The dominant note is a soft denim blue, sometimes deepening toward indigo in the low flatwoven blocks and lifting toward a washed sky blue in the raised squares. Running through it are slate gray, a true charcoal that reads almost black in the recessed rows, and unexpected passages of warm taupe and light brown that keep the whole thing from going cold. Scattered ivory and oatmeal flecks appear where undyed wool was spun into the yarn. Seen from across a room it settles into a single heathered blue gray, which is why it belongs with our blue area rugs while behaving like a neutral.

Hand-Knotted in Pakistan

Pakistan is one of the few places still weaving hand-knotted work at this size to a consistent standard, and the back of this piece shows it: even knot rows, a straight cotton foundation, squared corners and a hand-braided gray fringe finished by the weaver rather than machine serged. The pile is 100% natural wool at a generous 1/2 inch, dense enough to stand up to a dining table and chairs, soft enough underfoot to work in a great room. A weaving of 295 square feet takes a team of knotters the better part of a year on a single loom. If you are weighing how this category of Oriental rug differs from classical city weaving, the answer is here in the texture: same hand, entirely modern intent.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
