8'1" x 12' Moroccan Design Rug | Blue & Brown Banded Stripes | Hand-Knotted Wool, Brand New
Laid flat, this 8'1" x 12' rug reads like a horizon line: broad bands of indigo, slate and camel brown stacked one above the other, each band striated by the natural variation in the hand-spun wool. The pattern is Moroccan, but the construction is a proper knotted one, a 1/2" pile tied row by row onto a heavy natural wool ground, which gives it the loose, shaggy handle of a Berber piece with far more body underfoot than a flatweave. The camel skirt at both ends, the plaited teal and camel selvage braid, and the knotted tassels are all finished by hand, and the reverse shows clean, even knot rows rather than glue or backing. It is brand new and never used, ships with our certificate of authenticity, and sits at the quiet end of modern and contemporary hand-knotted rugs without ever looking machine made.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The faint diagonal line across the middle of the overhead photograph is a shadow from a storage fold, not wear, not fading and not damage. Thick wool pile like this holds a crease while the rug is rolled on a pallet, and it relaxes once the rug is laid flat in the room. Every rug we ship is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves Freeport.
Design and Motifs
The drawing is deliberately spare. Horizontal banding carries the entire field, something close to 20 bands of uneven depth, running from dark indigo at the ends through a wide pale camel stripe just past the centre, with several narrow 1 inch stripes acting as breaks between the heavier passages. Within each band, 2 or 3 tones of wool alternate knot by knot, so no stripe reads as a flat block of colour. Drawn over the top in single lines of pale blue and grey is a loose diamond lattice, 4 sided lozenges that meet, cross and drift out of register exactly the way a Berber weaver marks out a field freehand rather than following a printed cartoon. There is no drawn border and no medallion. The field simply stops at a plain camel frame of woven wool, finished with the braided selvage and tasselled ends visible in the corner photographs, which keeps the whole composition graphic and calm.
Colors: Indigo, Slate Blue and Camel Brown
Two colour families do all the work here. The blues run from a deep inky indigo through navy, a dusty violet blue and a soft slate grey blue, and in the close-up photographs you can pick out individual knots of bright pale teal scattered through the darker rows, the same teal used in the selvage braid. Against those blues sit the warm tones: camel, tobacco brown, taupe and a light sandy beige, with the palest beige concentrated in the broad stripe through the middle of the field and in the outer frame. Because the yarn is hand-spun, each colour breathes across the width in soft horizontal striation rather than sitting as one solid tone, and the boundaries between blue and brown blur where the two are knotted in alternating rows. The practical result is a rug that photographs as blue and brown banding but behaves like a neutral in a real room, warm enough for oak and walnut furniture, cool enough to hold its own against grey upholstery.
Origin and Weaving Quality
The original workshop tag is still attached and reads hand-knotted in Pakistan, 100% natural wool, Moroccan modern pattern. Pakistan is one of the few places still producing hand-knotted work at this scale and standard, with weavers trained in the same knotting discipline that underpins any good Oriental rug, applied here to a coarser, chunkier Moroccan gauge. That combination is what you are buying: the relaxed Berber look with workshop-grade execution, straight sides, square corners, a consistent 1/2" pile height across nearly 12 feet of length, and hand-braided selvages instead of a machine overlock. The wool is undyed in the warm tones and lightly dyed in the blues, which is why the surface has that dry, matte handle rather than a sheen. At 8'1" x 12" wide by 12 feet long it belongs with the large area rugs, big enough to run a sofa and two chairs fully onto the pile, and thick enough that it will wear in rather than wear out.
