9'9" x 14'9" Moroccan Wool Rug | Blue, Gray and Brown Ombre Diamond Lattice | Brand New

This is a big, quiet, confident piece of weaving: a 9'9" x 14'9" hand-knotted wool rug that borrows the Moroccan tribal vocabulary of open fields and freehand lattice and works it in a blue, gray and brown ombre. The pile is a generous 1/2" of natural wool, dense enough to feel substantial underfoot yet shorn low enough that the fine ivory lattice reads cleanly across the whole field. It is brand new and never used, one of the strongest modern and contemporary rugs we stock in this scale, and it sits naturally in the family of hand-knotted Oriental rug weaving rather than any machine made lookalike. As with every piece we sell, it ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming the size, the materials and the hand-knotted construction.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The flat overhead photograph was shot under warm studio light and reads slightly more mauve and brown than the rug does in person. The angled view, the corner shots and the close-ups are the truer reading: a slate and denim blue field carrying bands of warm gray and taupe. Tone will shift with your own light through the day, which is normal for a naturally dyed, hand-spun wool pile.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is deliberately simple and entirely freehand. A single ivory lattice runs corner to corner across the open field, forming large diamonds roughly 18" across, and every line wobbles slightly the way a weaver working without a tight cartoon makes it wobble. Inside each diamond sits one small ivory cross, a 5 knot plus motif, alternating row by row with pairs of stacked squares so the field never falls into a flat repeat. There is no floral border and no medallion. Instead, the two ends finish with a narrow checkerboard band of ivory and blue blocks, then a plain flatwoven blue kilim skirt and a hand-braided gray fringe, visible clearly in the corner and back photographs. That end treatment is the tell of a genuine tribal-style hand-knotted rug and it frames the field without competing with it, which is exactly why this design works under contemporary furniture.

Blue, Gray and Brown Ombre Coloring

Color is the real story here. The field is built from hand-spun wool in several closely related tones, so the ground moves through denim blue, slate, charcoal, warm mushroom gray and soft brown taupe in broad horizontal bands, an ombre effect weavers call abrash. In one stretch the wool pulls toward cool navy, a few inches later it warms into sand and coffee, and the transitions are gradual rather than striped. The close-up of the pile shows how the effect is achieved: each knot is a blend of blue, gray and beige fibers, so the depth comes from the yarn itself, not from a printed surface. Against that shifting ground the undyed ivory lattice and crosses are the only high-contrast note, which keeps the whole rug restful. If you are shopping the broader family of navy blue and blue rugs, this one is the softer, grayed-down end of the range and pairs easily with walnut, brass, white oak and gray upholstery.

Hand-Knotted in Pakistan: Weave and Quality

Pakistan's weaving workshops are now among the best in the world at this kind of coarse-gauge, high-wool-content tribal design, and the back photograph tells you why this one is worth owning: rows of tight, even knots across a cotton foundation, straight sides, square corners and no glue, no backing and no shortcuts. A room-size rug of 9'9" x 14'9" takes months on the loom at this weight, and the loom discipline shows in how flat it lies. The wool is the other half of the equation, hand-spun and full of lanolin, which is what gives the pile its dry sheen in the profile shot and what will let it take traffic in a living room or great room for decades. Among large hand-knotted area rugs this is the practical choice: soft enough to sit on, heavy enough to stay put, and tonal enough that it will outlast several changes of furniture.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
