9'9" x 14'2" Moroccan Design Wool Rug | Light Brown with Black Stripes | Hand-Knotted in Pakistan
This is a big, quiet, deeply tactile floor piece: 9'9" x 14'2" of hand-knotted natural wool in a Moroccan idiom, drawn with nothing but fine horizontal stripes and one diamond. The pile stands about 1/2" high and the yarn is left largely in its natural fleece color, so the surface has the soft irregular life of undyed wool rather than the flat evenness of a machine product. Along both long sides the weaver worked ivory and charcoal braided cords that end in small tassels, and both ends finish in a black flatwoven kilim panel with a chain of ivory stitching. It has never been used and is shipped with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is a genuine hand-knotted rug. Among modern and contemporary hand-knotted rugs, this is the kind of piece that carries a large room without competing with anything in it.
Design and Motifs
There is no border and no repeating lattice here, which is exactly the point. The field is crossed end to end by thin black stripes of uneven weight and spacing, some a single hairline row, others doubled into a broken dotted band, so the eye reads rhythm rather than pattern. Slightly above the center the weaver placed one lozenge: a diamond of roughly 4 concentric outlines in charcoal, filled with small hooked ticks and left deliberately imperfect at the corners, the way a tribal weaver marks a rug rather than decorates it. The 12 braided cords running down each long side are part of the design, not a finish detail, and the black kilim ends with their ivory chain stitch frame the composition top and bottom. This is minimalist drawing done by hand, which is why it reads warm instead of clinical, and it sits comfortably alongside other geometric hand-knotted rugs without the busyness of a classical field.
Color
The ground is a light brown that leans warm grey, closer to greige or pale taupe than to any tan or beige with yellow in it. Because the wool is natural and largely undyed, the tone moves gently across the width: some knot rows sit a shade cooler and dove grey, others warmer and sandy, and the result is a soft, breathing surface rather than one solid block of color. Against that ground the stripes are a true charcoal black, dense enough to register clearly from across a room but thin enough that the rug still reads as a neutral. The braided side cords bring in the only bright note, an ivory that is almost cream, twisted together with the same charcoal. The kilim end panels are the darkest area of the whole piece. In practice this palette works with walnut, oak, brass, black metal and grey upholstery, and it will not fight an existing color scheme.
Origin and Weaving Quality
The rug was hand-knotted in Pakistan, where the weaving workshops around Lahore and Peshawar have become one of the most reliable sources in the world for contemporary hand-knotted work in the Moroccan Beni Ourain manner. The knotting is done on a vertical loom, knot by knot, by weavers trained in the same technique used for any traditional Oriental rug, and the back shown in the photographs is clean and even with straight selvages and square corners across the full 14'2" length. What matters in a piece like this is not a high knot count but the wool and the handle, and both are excellent: heavy, springy, lanolin-rich yarn with a 1/2" pile that compresses underfoot and recovers. At this scale it is a genuine room-sized floor covering, and if you are comparing 10 x 14 rugs for an open plan space, this one anchors furniture on all sides with room to spare.
