9'9" x 14' Agra Oriental Rug | Kashan Design | Dark Green & Lavender | Hand-Knotted Wool

This is a large, formal, hand-knotted Agra woven in India, measuring 9'9" x 14' and drawn in the classic Kashan manner: a deep forest green field covered edge to edge with palmettes, rosettes and fine gold vines, wrapped in a 5 band border built around a lavender ground. It is new and never used, with a full even wool pile, straight sides and clean ivory fringe, and it sits in the sweet spot of 10 x 14 Oriental rugs that anchor a full living room or a long dining table with chairs pulled out. A certificate of authenticity is issued with the rug confirming that it is hand-knotted, its materials and its origin.

Design and Motifs

The field is a true all-over floral design with no central medallion, so the drawing repeats in mirrored pairs from the center line out to all 4 corners. Large fan shaped palmettes in gold and cream alternate with 8 petal lavender rosettes, and between them sit serrated saz leaves, small pink blossom sprays and slender bud stems, all connected by a continuous thin yellow vine that never breaks. The border system runs 5 bands deep: a wide lavender main border carrying gold palmettes and teal cusped florets, flanked on both sides by dark green zigzag minor stripes, then a pair of gold guard bands filled with a crescent and rosette repeat that reads clearly even from across the room. Corner resolutions in the main border are properly turned rather than cut off, which is the detail that separates a carefully cartooned rug from a rushed one.

The Dark Green and Lavender Color Story

The ground is a dark bottle green that reads almost black in low light and opens up to a soft moss tone where the light rakes across the pile, visible in the angled photographs. Against it, the floral work is carried in warm gold, camel, cream and a dusty peach, with touches of soft pink in the small blossoms and cool teal blue inside the palmette hearts. The lavender of the main border is a muted, slightly greyed purple closer to plum than to violet, and it is the color that keeps this rug from being a conventional green and gold room rug. Outer gold guard bands and the ivory fringe frame the whole piece and lift the darker center. Green and lavender is a demanding combination that most weavers avoid, and here the tones are close enough in value that the rug stays calm rather than loud, sitting comfortably with walnut furniture, brass, cream upholstery and aged leather.
