14' x 24' Mansion Size Oriental Rug | Kashan Design Navy Field | Hand-Knotted Wool

Very few hand-knotted rugs are woven at 14' x 24', and fewer still are drawn this carefully at that scale. This is a true mansion size piece, roughly 336 square feet of hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation, with a midnight navy field, a rose and soft blue medallion at the center and a wide ivory main border running the full perimeter. It belongs in the small group of genuine oversize and mansion size rugs that can actually cover a great room, a long formal dining room or a hotel lobby without a seam or a border of bare floor. The pile is a soft natural wool cut at 3/8", the condition is excellent with no wear, and every rug we ship carries our certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

The layout follows the classic Kashan design: one lobed central medallion, a pendant finial at each end of it, four corner spandrels and an all-over vine field between them. The medallion is built in three rings, a rose outer lobe filled with boteh paisley and small cross rosettes, a soft blue inner field, and a pale gold rosette core drawn with about 16 radiating petals. The spandrels repeat that vocabulary in a larger rose ground, packed with curled paisley, palmettes and split leaves. Between medallion and border, the navy field carries a continuous arabesque of scrolling vines, tulips, carnations and serrated acanthus leaves that mirror across both the long and short axes, so the drawing reads correctly from every side of the room. The border system is deep: a wide ivory palmette and vine band framed by rose and blue floral guard stripes, with narrow reciprocal minor stripes on either side, 7 bands in total from the field to the navy selvage.

Color: Midnight Navy With Rust, Ivory and Sage

The field is a dark, saturated navy blue that reads almost black in low light and opens up to true indigo under a window, and it is the reason the rest of the palette works. Against it the drawing is rendered in ivory, cream and pale wheat, muted sage and olive green, dusty light blue and a soft rose that shifts toward rust and terracotta in the medallion, the pendants and the four spandrels. There are small hits of deep burgundy and brown in the medallion leaves, and pale peach highlights in the flower heads. The ivory main border lightens the whole perimeter and keeps a 14' x 24' rug from looking heavy, while the narrow rose guard stripes tie the border back to the medallion. It is a cool, dusty, low-contrast palette overall, easy to live with, and it sits comfortably with warm woods, off-white walls, brass and dark leather.

Made in India: Weaving and Quality

This rug was hand-knotted in India, which is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and a piece like this shows why: India is one of the very few places still set up to put a loom of this width in a workshop and keep a team on it long enough to finish 336 square feet of fine floral drawing. The weavers here work in the classical tradition, following a cartoon knot by knot, and the evidence is in the curved line, the even vine scroll and the clean symmetry of the spandrels across a 24 foot length. The wool is soft and takes a low sheen, the 3/8" pile is dense and level from end to end, and the cotton foundation gives the rug the weight and stability a floor covering this size needs to lie flat. As an Oriental rug in never-used condition from the 2000's, it offers court-style drawing at a fraction of what an antique of the same footprint would cost.
