12'1" x 18'1" Kashan Design Oriental Rug | Burgundy Field, Navy Medallion | Fine Wool, Made in Pakistan

This is a true palace piece, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and measuring 12'1" x 18'1", which puts it in the band of oversize 12x18 rugs that very few rooms can take and very few workshops attempt. The field is a deep burgundy carrying a single large medallion, the corners drop into ivory spandrels, and the whole thing is framed by a navy border of flowering vine. It has never been on a floor, the pile stands full and even across all 217 inches of length, and the handle is supple rather than stiff. Design and Motifs

The drawing follows the classic Kashan medallion layout, a curvilinear formula of central medallion, matching pendants and quartered corner spandrels. The medallion itself is built in layers: a pink and ivory rosette at the dead center, a ring of 8 cream cartouches filled with red and green blossoms, then a navy ground crowded with curling serrated leaves and palmettes. Two lobed pendants run north and south off the medallion, and the rest of the burgundy field is filled edge to edge with scrolling vine, small rosettes and leaf sprays that stay balanced without ever repeating mechanically. The ivory spandrels at the 4 corners carry their own floral bouquets and are outlined in light blue scrollwork that reappears as large cloud-band brackets along the field edge. The main border is navy with a continuous flowering vine, flanked by a light blue guard of alternating rosettes and a narrow burgundy outer edge, so the composition closes cleanly on all 4 sides.

A Burgundy Field Cooled by Navy and Light Blue

The main color is a deep burgundy that photographs closer to wine in daylight and warms toward oxblood under lamps, and the wool takes it with a soft sheen rather than a flat wash. Against it the navy of the medallion and the main border reads almost black at a distance and opens into true blue up close. The cooling element is the light blue used in the corner brackets and the inner guard, a soft aqua tone that lifts the palette away from the usual red and navy pairing. Cream and beige carry the spandrels and the small cartouches inside the medallion, pink appears in the central rosette and in the curling scroll outlines, and green and brown run through the leaves and vine work as quieter supporting notes. Small touches of clear red brighten individual blossoms. The overall effect from across a large room is a rich burgundy ground, but every step closer brings out another layer of color.

Woven in Pakistan, Finished Like a Workshop Piece

This rug was made in Pakistan, where the best workshops still weave curvilinear designs by hand on cotton warps and build the pile from good highland wool. The back photograph tells the story: straight, tight rows of knots, an even beat with no ridging, and clean cotton warps running into a hand-finished ivory fringe. That density is what allows the fine vine work and the layered medallion to hold their shape at this scale, since a coarser weave simply cannot draw a curved line this cleanly. Wool pile on a cotton foundation is also the right build for a room this large, because it stays flat, takes traffic and cleans well over decades.
