12'1" x 18'1" Oversize Indian Rug | Khorasan Floral Medallion | Coral, Navy & Ivory Wool Pile
At 12'1" x 18'1" this is a palace-scale floor piece, hand-knotted in wool in India in the 2000s and drawn in the classic Khorasan medallion manner. What makes it work at this size is the color balance: an orange coral field that stays light across 18 feet, a deep indigo medallion and corner spandrels to anchor the center, and a wide ivory and beige border system that frames the whole thing without crowding it. The pile is full and even from end to end, the condition is perfect, and the rug ships with a certificate of authenticity. Pieces this big are the hardest thing to source in hand-knotted work, which is why we keep them together in our oversized rugs selection.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The straight shadow lines you can see in the warehouse photos are fold marks from the rug being rolled and stacked on a pallet. They are not wear, not fading and not damage. They relax and disappear once the rug is laid flat in the room, and every rug leaves us professionally steamed and pressed before shipping.
Design and Motifs
The center holds a round cream rosette medallion filled with 4 coral blossoms and a small turquoise star, ringed by a scalloped ivory edge and set on a large indigo star medallion of curling vine and split leaf. Above and below it sit navy pendant cartouches with gold palmettes inside, each one rising on a cluster of fine stems that read almost like a vase of flowers. The field between medallion and border is not empty for an inch: cream and gold palmettes, lotus heads, small square rosettes in blue and coral, feathered leaves and thin vines run corner to corner in a mirrored all-over layout. The 4 corner spandrels repeat the indigo ground so the composition closes cleanly. The border runs 7 bands deep, a coral main border of flowering trees and white blossom sprays between broad ivory bands of vine and palmette, with narrow pale blue reciprocal stripes dividing them and a plain coral outer edge before the ivory fringe.
Orange Coral, Indigo and Ivory
The field color is the whole personality of this rug. It sits between orange coral and soft terracotta, warmer and pinker under daylight, deeper and more salmon in the close-up photos, and it gives the floor a glow rather than the heavy red most large traditional rugs fall back on. Against it, the indigo of the medallion, the pendants and the spandrels reads almost black at a distance and resolves into a very dark blue up close, printed over with cream vine work. The border is ivory going to a soft wheat beige, which is what keeps 18 feet of pattern from feeling dense. Inside the drawing you get the supporting palette: light sky blue and turquoise in the small blossoms and leaf tips, muted sage green in the stems, honey gold in the palmettes, and clean white in the flower heads. The wool takes light well, so the coral shifts a shade as you walk the room, and the blues stay cool against it.
Made in India: Weave and Quality
India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted weaving is done now, and this piece shows why: the knotting is tight and regular across the back, the curved vine work stays fluid at the top and bottom of an 18 foot field, and the two halves of the design mirror each other accurately, which is difficult on a loom this wide. The wool pile on a cotton foundation gives the rug weight and a soft, slightly lustrous surface that will take heavy traffic for decades. As an Oriental rug in the Khorasan medallion idiom, it belongs with the formal, fully drawn traditional pieces rather than anything simplified for volume. If you are shopping specifically at this scale, compare it against the rest of our 12 x 18 rugs, where the difference in drawing quality shows up fast.
