12' x 14'10" Indo-Persian Oriental Rug | Burgundy Field, Navy Border | Hand-Knotted Wool

This is a big, confident room-filling piece: a hand-knotted wool Oriental rug with a deep burgundy field, a midnight navy main border and gold guard bands that frame the whole thing like a picture. The pile is a full 3/8" of springy wool on a cotton foundation, the original weaver tags are still attached to the back, and the handle is heavy and even from selvage to selvage. At 12 feet by nearly 15 feet it belongs in the category of oversize hand-knotted rugs that anchor a whole great room rather than float in it. Design and Motifs

The field is drawn in the classical Indo-Persian idiom: a symmetrical all over floral layout of scrolling vines, round rosettes and long feathered saz leaves that curl back on themselves, with a small ivory shield medallion resting at the exact center. Large ivory corner spandrels close off the 4 corners and repeat the same vocabulary at reduced scale. The surround is a full triple border system: a narrow ivory stripe of running blossoms, a broad navy main border carrying alternating lotus palmettes and turned leaf rosettes, and outer gold guard bands of linked flower heads. Look at the corner photographs and you can see the border pattern turn cleanly at each angle, the mark of a cartoon that was properly resolved rather than improvised at the edge.

A Burgundy, Navy and Gold Color Story

The ground is a saturated wine burgundy that photographs almost black-cherry in shadow and glows garnet where the light rakes across the pile. Against it the drawing is carried in saffron and old gold, ivory, and a whole run of soft greens: sage, celadon, seafoam and a deeper olive in the leaf tips. Small hits of coral, apricot and rust warm the palmette centers, while charcoal and black outlining gives every flower a crisp edge instead of letting the colors bleed together. The navy main border supplies the cool counterweight, and the gold guard bands act as a bright seam between the two. It is a rich, formal palette rather than a quiet one, and it pulls mahogany, brass, walnut and cream upholstery together very easily.

Made in India: Weaving Town Quality and Construction

The original workshop tags on the reverse record the content as 90% wool and 10% cotton and name India as the country of origin, which is exactly where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced. The weave is tight and regular, the back shows clean rows of knots with no pulling or drift, and the ends are finished with hand-tied ivory cotton fringe. Wool of this grade takes dye deeply and burnishes with use, so the surface sheen you see in the close-ups will only improve underfoot. With a 3/8" pile on a cotton foundation this is a heavy, stable rug built for a high-traffic formal room, and it arrives in excellent condition with full pile and sound selvages.
