Design and Motifs

The field carries a classic Oushak-style all over design, with no medallion and no center anchor, so the pattern can be cut visually by furniture without losing its logic. Rows of large serrated palmettes alternate with small 4 lobed rosettes and diamond-shaped blossoms, all strung together on thin, loosely drawn vine stems that wander rather than repeat mechanically. Between them sit paired cypress-like leaf forms and tiny stepped crosses that fill the open gray ground. The main border is wide and generous, running an ivory ground with big open flower heads, angular serrated leaves and hooked vine turns, framed on both sides by narrow guard stripes of small rosettes and leaf pairs. Note how the drawing squares off at the 4 corners instead of forcing a curve, a village-style resolution that suits the scale of the piece.

A Slate Gray Field With Ivory and Gold

The ground is a medium slate gray that leans slightly blue in daylight and moves toward soft stone gray under warm lamps, with a gentle abrash that keeps the large open areas alive. Against it, the motifs are worked in ivory and chalky cream, in muted mustard gold, and in a dusty taupe-rose that sits between the two. The gold is the accent that carries the eye: it appears in the centers of the palmettes, in the small rosettes and in the fine outlining stripe that separates the field from the border. The border itself is a warm ivory, closer to sand than to white, and its flowers are drawn in gray-blue, olive brown and pale celadon so the frame stays quiet. The outer edge returns to the same slate gray as the field, and the fringe finishes in natural beige.
