2'6" x 8'1" Super Kazak Runner Rug | Blue Field, Ivory Geometric Border | 100% Natural Wool

This 2'6" x 8'1" Super Kazak runner is a hand-knotted Oriental rug made in Pakistan in 100% natural wool on a cotton foundation, and it is the kind of piece we buy for customers who want a long narrow rug with real weaving behind it rather than a printed look-alike. The handle is supple and the wool has a slight sheen when you run a hand along the pile, which is why the back-office note on this one reads silky wool. The 8 foot length suits a hallway, a stair landing or the working side of a kitchen island, and at 30" wide it clears most doorways and baseboard trim without crowding them. Condition is excellent, with full even pile, straight sides and a clean ivory cotton fringe. It ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming the weave, materials and origin.

Design and Motifs

The field runs as a vertical column of 4 large medallions, alternating brick red and terracotta rust, each one outlined with latch-hook hooks and stepped squares and centered on an 8 petal rosette inside a plain lozenge. Between them sit paired smaller diamond medallions with ivory grounds and comb-like skirts, plus single red arrowhead motifs on the center line. The spaces around the medallions carry stylized shrubs, serrated leaves and small hooked flowerheads, all drawn in straight lines and clean angles the way geometric Oriental rugs of the Kazak family are meant to be. The wide ivory main border alternates 8 pointed star rosettes with upright palmettes and leaf sprays, framed by narrow reciprocal guard stripes in red and navy and a fine ivory bead line, so the border reads as a crisp frame rather than a busy edge.

A Denim Blue Field with Ivory, Red and Green Accents

The ground is a deep denim indigo that shifts gently from panel to panel, a natural abrash that comes from hand-spun wool taking dye unevenly, and it keeps the blue alive instead of flat. Against it the medallions read in two distinct warm tones, a dark brick red and a lighter copper terracotta, with navy outlines pulling the drawing tight. Ivory does the lifting: the main border, the medallion centers, the small rosettes and the bead lines are all a soft buttery cream rather than bright white. Secondary notes include pale sky blue in the leaf sprays, a muted mustard yellow in a few border buds, and green, which appears as the teal-green overcast selvage and in the blue-green leaves of the border. The overall effect sits comfortably with navy, cream and walnut interiors, and makes this one of the easier blue Oriental rugs to place in a narrow space.

Super Kazak Weaving in Pakistan

Kazak drawing comes out of the southern Caucasus village tradition, and today the best hand-knotted work in that idiom is woven in Pakistani workshops, where weavers use hand-spun natural wool and the old geometric cartoons. Super Kazak is the finer grade of that production: more knots across the width than ordinary village Kazak work, which is what lets the latch-hooks, the small comb skirts and the star rosettes stay sharp at this scale instead of turning into blocks. The back of this runner shows a tight, regular knot face on a cotton foundation, with the double-wefted structure that gives the rug its weight and keeps it lying flat in a corridor. The wool is the real story, high-lanolin and glossy, hard-wearing underfoot and quick to shed soil, and the ends are finished with a woven kilim band and a hand-tied ivory fringe.
