3'5" x 13'2" Kazak Design Runner Rug | Caucasian Geometric Medallions | Multi-Color Wool

A 13 foot runner is a piece of furniture as much as a floor covering, and this one carries its length well. Measuring 3'5" x 13'2", it is hand-knotted in wool at a 3/8" pile on a cotton foundation, drawn in the Kazak idiom of the Caucasus and woven in Pakistan, where much of today's best hand-knotted village work is produced. The drawing is confident and slightly irregular in the way hand-drawn geometric rugs always are, with a run of linked diamond medallions marching the full length of a deep navy ground. Condition is good, with a soft, settled handle and clear pattern definition front and back. Every rug we sell, this Oriental rug included, ships with a certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

The field is organized around a column of large diamond medallions, each one outlined with a stepped contour and filled with hooked latch motifs and paired triangles in orange, ivory and blue. The medallions alternate in color rather than repeating mechanically, so the eye travels the full 13'2" without settling. Around them the ground is packed with 8 petal rosettes, small cross flowers, 8 pointed stars and hooked octagons, the scattered vocabulary that defines tribal rugs of the Caucasian tradition. The border system is unusually generous for a narrow piece: a wide main band of reciprocal diamonds and hooked lozenges, flanked by several narrow guard stripes of running diamonds and barber pole stripes, which frames the field and visually anchors the runner along a wall.

A Navy Ground Lit by Orange, Gold and Ivory

The base note is a deep indigo navy, dark enough to read almost black in low light and clearly blue where the sun hits it. Against that ground the weaver worked a warm palette: pumpkin orange and saffron gold carry the medallion interiors and the star motifs, ivory outlines the drawing and gives the diamonds their crispness, and softer rose and terracotta tones fill the smaller field flowers. Teal and slate blue appear in the octagons and in one of the larger medallions, cooling the warmth just enough. There is gentle abrash, a natural variation in the dye lots, across the navy and the gold, which is what keeps a multi-color runner like this from looking flat. In the borders the ivory, gold and rose diamonds sit on darker grounds, so the frame reads lighter than the field and the whole piece feels wider than 41 inches.

Kazak Weaving, Made in Pakistan

Kazak is a Caucasian design language, bold, angular and built for the loom rather than the drawing board, and it has been kept alive by the workshops of Pakistan, where hand-knotted weaving on traditional looms remains a living trade. This runner is knotted in wool on a cotton foundation with a 3/8" pile, dense enough to take traffic and short enough to show the geometry cleanly. The reverse, shown in the last photograph, tells the story: even rows of knots, straight selvages and a pattern that reads as sharply from the back as from the face, which is the first thing to check on any handmade piece. At 13'2" long it suits a genuinely long corridor, making it a practical choice for hallway runner rugs where a standard 8 or 10 foot length would leave the floor looking unfinished.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
