4'3" x 7' Persian Tabriz Rug | Ivory Wool & Silk All-Over Floral Medallion | 60 Raj, Approx. 400 KPSI, Never Used
A small rug is where fineness shows itself fastest, and this 4'3" x 7' Tabriz has nowhere to hide. It is a new, never-used workshop piece, hand-knotted in wool with silk worked into the highlights on a cotton foundation, at roughly 400 knots per square inch (60 Raj on the Tabriz scale). At that density the curling vines cross the ivory field in unbroken lines and the florets keep their outlines down to heads the size of a fingernail, which is exactly what the fourth photograph shows. The pile sits low and even, the selvages are tight, and the ivory cotton fringe is still crisp. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity stating origin, materials and knot count, so what is written here follows the rug rather than the other way around.
Design and Motifs
The drawing is the classic Tabriz workshop formula: a layered lobed medallion at the center, a slender pendant cartouche above and below it, 4 corner spandrels, and an all-over floral field that keeps working behind all of it rather than emptying out. The medallion core is a small sea-green rosette ringed by pale florets, wrapped in a camel cartouche with scrolling brackets and finished with fine outlined tips. Around it the field carries palmettes, multi-petal rosettes, serrated split leaves and curling cloud-band leaf forms, all strung on a thin vine that mirrors across both axes. The spandrels repeat the same vocabulary in heavier scale, anchored by brick-toned palmettes. The main border alternates large rosettes with paired leaves and smaller buds, set between narrow guard stripes of reciprocal florets and a fine outer stripe, so the border reads as 5 distinct bands without crowding the field.
A Palette of Ivory, Teal, Mauve and Wine Red
The field is a warm ivory, closer to unbleached cream than white, and it is the reason the rug photographs bright in a room with little natural light. Against it the palette is deliberately soft: mauve and dusty rose in the florets, sea green and deep forest green in the leaves, mid blue and dark navy in the small buds, and wine red held back for the palmette hearts and the corner accents. The medallion and the main border sit in camel and taupe, a full step warmer than the field, and the guard stripes carry a clear green that outlines the border on both edges. Silk highlights catch in the rose and green passages, so the colours shift slightly as you walk around the rug. Buyers shopping ivory and beige Persian rugs will find this one unusually easy to place, since nothing in it fights a wood floor or a neutral wall.
Woven in Tabriz, Northwest Persia
Tabriz has been the commercial and technical center of Persian weaving for centuries, and it is the city that measures its own work in Raj, the number of knots per gereh (about 2.75 in) across the width. 40 Raj is ordinary commercial goods, 50 Raj is genuinely fine, and 60 Raj, roughly 400 knots per square inch, is where a rug crosses into collector-grade territory because the weaver can finally draw a true curve instead of a stepped approximation. That is the standard here, and the medallion outlines and vine tendrils are the proof of it. Tabriz weavers work on a cotton foundation with a hook-tool technique that produces the dense, flat, hard-wearing pile you can feel on this piece, and the best workshops add silk into the highlight colours to lift the drawing. At 4'3" x 7' this is a workshop piece at a size that suits a bedside, a study, a hallway landing or the space in front of a sofa.
