4' x 18'5" Kazak Runner Rug | All-Over Geometric Medallions | Sky Blue | New, Never Used
This is a long, unusually generous runner: 4 feet wide and 18'5" from end to end, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation in the Kazak tradition. Most runners stop at 2'6" or 3 feet wide, which is why a 4 foot width reads more like a narrow room rug than a strip of hallway covering, and the extra width lets the full geometric field be seen rather than cropped by furniture. The pile is a good medium height with clean, even clipping, the selvages are tight, and the piece has never been laid in a home. Each rug ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming the hand-knotted construction and the wool pile shown in the close-up photographs. If an 18 foot corridor has been the problem, this is one of very few hallway runner rugs that will cover it in a single piece.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The two full-length photographs were taken from a distance and read slightly deeper and darker than the rug actually is. The close-up images are the truest guide to color: the field is a clear sky blue with a denim depth to it, not navy.
Design and Motifs
The field runs as a continuous all-over lattice rather than a single centerpiece, which is the right choice at this length because the eye never looks for a middle. Down the center sits a column of stepped, hooked medallions with small notched cartouches at their hearts, and between them stand large serrated leaf palmettes and 8 petal rosettes drawn in red, cream and black outline. Angular vine arms and little latch hook hands branch off the palmettes, filling the ground with constant small movement. Every line is straight or stepped, with no curved drawing anywhere, which is the mark of true Kazak work. The main border is an ivory ground carrying an alternating run of blossom heads and serrated leaves, flanked on both sides by narrow guard stripes of reciprocal red and cream, so the pattern is cleanly fenced in along both long edges.
A Closer Look at the Colors
The dominant color is blue, read in the close-ups as a soft sky to denim tone that shifts slightly lighter and darker across the width as the wool catches the light, the natural variation good hand-knotted wool always shows. Against it, brick to tomato red carries most of the pattern weight in the palmettes, medallion outlines and reciprocal guard stripes. Cream and ivory do two jobs: they form the wide outer border ground and they pick out the rosette petals and leaf tips, which is what keeps the blue field from going flat. Warm beige fills the quieter parts of the border vine, soft brown appears in the leaf shading and outlines, and black is used sparingly as a fine drawing line around motif edges and in a handful of small medallion centers. A few small touches of pale green and gold sit inside the rosettes. The overall effect is cool and clear, blue and ivory first, red second, with the browns and black doing the structural work.
Origin and Weaving Quality
This rug is made in Pakistan, where workshops have built a serious reputation for reviving old Caucasian Kazak drawing in hand-knotted wool. The Kazak design itself comes from the highland weaving of the Caucasus, bold geometry, big motifs and strong color, and it is exactly the kind of pattern that survives being scaled up to an 18 foot runner without losing its character. The back, shown against a ruler in one of the photographs, is evenly knotted row on row with no pulling or waisting, which is why the piece lies straight along its full length. The wool has a dry, springy handle that wears well under foot traffic, and the cotton foundation keeps the long body stable. For a buyer weighing this against Persian village work, it is worth understanding how an Oriental rug like this is classified and judged.
